Description
Job Title: Part-Time Instructor, Intro to Judaism
Status: Part-Time / Hourly
Supervisor: Vice President of Jewish Engagement, Director of Miller Introduction to Judaism
Compensation: Hourly compensation is determined by teaching schedule (Sundays/Weeknights) - Weeknights: $111.12/hr, Sundays: $129.63/hr
The Maas Center for Jewish Journeys at American Jewish University offers a suite of educational and experiential programs. Our flagship offering is the Miller Intro to Judaism Program, an 18-week course designed for individuals seeking a refresher in Judaism or learning about Judaism for the first time.
Endorsed by the Rabbinical Assembly, the Miller Program creates welcoming and informative learning environments that equip students with the tools they need to explore and live a Jewish life beyond the classroom. While many students join the program as part of a conversion journey, participation is not limited to those pursuing conversion.
We are the most widely attended Intro to Judaism program in North America, serving over 1,000 students annually through our virtual platform, with participants joining from across the United States and around the world.
We are currently seeking additional clergy to teach from our On One Foot curriculum. Classes meet once weekly for 2.5 hours over an 18-week period. Instructors are expected to assign occasional homework to support student learning and to be available to answer student emails and questions for up to 30 minutes per week outside of class.
The position requires approximately three hours per week, including teaching time, lesson preparation, and out-of-class student support (54 hours total per 18-week course). Qualified instructors may be invited to teach multiple 18-week programs per year.
This position is fully online. Instructors must be comfortable teaching on Zoom and using tools such as breakout rooms, whiteboard, screen sharing, and other interactive features.
Duties
Provide instruction for at least one full 18-week cycle Prepare for class and become familiar with course materials and curriculum Be available to students outside of class to guide them through the conversion process and respond to questions related to Jewish ritual, theology, and practice Create a welcoming class environment that encourages participation and ensures equitable engagement Adhere to Miller Program and American Jewish University policies, guidelines, and expectations Perform other related duties as required Qualifications
Rabbinical or cantorial ordination from an accredited institution Familiarity with Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist denominations preferred; experience with other Jewish denominations is also valued Extensive knowledge of Judaism and its diverse practices and customs At least one year of experience teaching at the introductory level Demonstrated ability to build rapport and foster community in an online learning environment Proficiency with Zoom, including breakout rooms, screen sharing, whiteboard, muting participants, and related tools Sensitivity to and experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, including varying cultures, races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, and disability statuses We encourage applications from individuals of all races, national origins, genders, sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, ages, as well as veterans and individuals with disabilities.
To apply, please submit your resume and a cover letter explaining your interest in this role and how your experience aligns with our needs.
