Overview
The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10-12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program. It also serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry (www.imsa.edu).
The faculty and staff of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) invite you to join them in shaping and implementing the next generation of innovative and engaging learning experiences. IMSA is actively seeking applications for the full-time position of Coordinator of Residence Life Programming in the Office of Residence Life .
The Department of Residence Life is a part of the Office of Student Affairs and strives to provide students with an equitable, safe, healthy, and comfortable living environment for IMSA’s diverse student population. Students live on campus in residence hall communities, which foster their personal, social, intellectual and ethical leadership development. The Residence Life staff is composed of two Coordinators of Residence Life, 28 Resident Counselors and Day Hall Monitors, as well as the Administrative Assistant who supports the Residence Life department.
The Coordinators of Residence Life are 11-month, full-time, live-on, professional staff members, whose key responsibilities include providing leadership for the Residence Life department, facilitation of staff hiring and training, execution of emergency procedures, crisis response, and supervision as well as mentoring and training of Resident Counselors. The Coordinators work with the Executive Director of Campus Experience to provide structure, leadership, vision, and development to the Department of Residence Life. The Coordinator of Residence Life Programming work hours vary and include evening and weekend responsibilities as the Administrator on Call. The Coordinators of Residence Life report to the Executive Director of Campus Experience.
Responsibilities
Principal Responsibilities :
Train, directly supervise and evaluate the assigned Resident Counselors (RCs) and Senior Residence Counselors
Supervise the operations of assigned halls; Conduct weekly walk-through of residence halls to identify maintenance needs, assess damages, ensure building cleanliness, and confirm overall building safety
Coordinate and supervise residence hall openings and closings at the beginning and end of each semester and during each extended weekend
Participate in Administrator on Call rotation, supervising on-call Resident Counselors and/or Senior Resident Counselors and providing crisis and emergency response in accordance with Academy policies
Coordinate weekly Residence Life team meetings
Serve as the programming coordinator for the Residence Life department
Responsible for the Residence Life curriculum, in content research, development and implementation aligned with current educational trends and student needs; Resident Counselors focused on Student Development Theory and industry trends, as well as facilitation and ways to measure impact
Partner with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion on student programming and staff training initiatives.
Responsible for RC onboarding and training
Oversees Senior RCs with programming-related liaison responsibilities, such as:
RSL Coordinator
Professional Development
Service Learning
Hall Tutors
Conduct student disciplinary hearings as assigned by the Chief Hearing Officer
Active engagement with best practices and emerging issues in higher education, gifted student learning, student housing and student affairs
Maintain cooperative working relationships with offices on campus, including but not limited to security, maintenance, faculty, and the front desk
Establish positive relationships with students through informal interactions
Represent the Department of Residence Life on designated committees
Assist with divisional and campus-wide events, such as Preview Day, Convocation and Graduation
Attend weekly staff and department meetings
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Skills and Experience:
The required skills and experience for this position include:
Master’s degree in college student personnel, higher education administration or related field required
Minimum two years of experience hiring, training and evaluating professional staff
Minimum of five years professional experience working in residential life and/or higher education
Demonstrated crisis management skills and ability to respond to emergency situations requiring the use of stairs, quick movement, and administration of first aid/CPR
Effective oral and written communication skills
Comfortable using technology to communicate and increase efficiency including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite and Google Business Suite
Experience in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion to provide culturally competent training for Residence Life staff
Strong service orientation and ability to relate effectively with diverse individuals and groups at all levels of the organization
Demonstrated ability to be productive, deliver high quality work, take initiative, use good judgement, and problem solve
Ability and willingness to work irregular hours
Valid driver's license
Salary and Benefits:
This position pays $52,500 for an 11-month term of employment each year. Coorindators of Residence Life also receive furnished living space, meal plan, free parking, utilities, and internet access year round. Due to occupancy safety standards, the employee may have no more than 2 dependents (spouse through civil union or marriage/children) live in our provided housing. IMSA offers a comprehensive state benefits package (major medical, dental, and vision) with rates found here and a retirement plan through the State University Retirement System (SURS).
