The role ensures construction activities comply with contract documents, applicable codes, agency standards, and safety requirements, while serving as a key technical resource to the Resident Engineer and mentoring junior inspection staff.</p>\n<h2>Responsibilities</h2>\n<p> </p>\n<p>Inspection, Quality & Compliance</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Inspect and verify construction work for compliance with plans, specifications, shop drawings, CTDOT standards, railroad requirements, and applicable codes.</li>\n <li>Observe construction activities on one or more of the following:</li>\n <ul>\n  <li>Highway/bridge work (earthwork, drainage, concrete, steel, utilities, MPT)</li>\n  <li>Buildings/facilities (architectural, structural, MEP, roofing, renovations)</li>\n  <li>Rail/transit projects (trackwork, platforms, facilities, utilities, yards)</li>\n </ul>\n <li>Monitor contractor compliance with environmental permits, work zone safety, railroad safety rules, OSHA requirements, and PPE protocols.</li>\n <li>Identify nonconforming work and coordinate corrective actions with the contractor and Resident Engineer.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Testing, Measurement & Documentation</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Perform and/or witness required materials testing and special inspections.</li>\n <li>Prepare daily inspection reports, photo documentation, and progress summaries.</li>\n <li>Measure, calculate, and verify quantities for materials installed, delivered, or stored.</li>\n <li>Maintain field documentation using electronic systems (e.g., AASHTOWare, COMPASS, ProjectWise, SharePoint).</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Coordination & Technical Support</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Coordinate with the Resident Engineer, project engineers, contractors, CTDOT staff, railroad representatives, municipalities, and other stakeholders.</li>\n <li>Participate in project meetings; report field conditions and track action items.</li>\n <li>Assist with RFIs, field issue resolution, and support for change orders and extra work.</li>\n <li>Provide technical input on constructability challenges and engineering issues.</li>\n</ul>\n<p> </p>\n<p>Mentorship & Leadership</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Provide guidance and oversight to junior inspectors and field staff.</li>\n <li>Support the Resident Engineer with contract administration, documentation, and verification activities.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Experience & Skills</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Field inspection experience on transportation, buildings/vertical construction, rail infrastructure, or civil projects.</li>\n <li>Working knowledge of CTDOT Form 819, building and fire codes, railroad safety procedures, and public-sector construction contracts.</li>\n <li>Familiarity with construction materials, methods, and major trades (structural, architectural, MEP, utilities, roadway, bridge, rail).</li>\n <li>Strong ability to interpret plans and specifications.</li>\n <li>Proficiency with digital construction documentation systems.</li>\n <li>Effective written and verbal communication skills.</li>\n</ul>\n<h2>Qualifications</h2>\n<p>Minimum Qualifications:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering Technology, or related field and 4 years of experience</li>\n</ul>\n<p>OR</p>\n<ul>\n <li>High School Diploma and a NICET Level III or a relevant Trade License and 6 years of experience</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Preferred Qualifications:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>One or more of the following certifications (or ability to obtain):</li>\n <ul>\n  <li>NICET Level III or IV</li>\n  <li>ACI, NETTCP, ATSSA</li>\n  <li>OSHA 10- or 30-Hour</li>\n </ul>\n</ul>\n<p>Physical & Working Conditions</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Ability to work in active construction environments, including uneven terrain, heights, excavations, and varied weather conditions.</li>\n <li>Willingness to work nights, weekends, and off-hours as required for traffic shifts, track outages, or building shutdowns.</li>\n</ul>\n<h2>Benefits</h2>\n<p>M&J is a leader in providing quality engineering consulting services to a diverse and exciting client base.
