Responsibilities
The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) provides direct 1:1 and small-group behavioral interventions to students with significant behavioral and instructional needs. Working under the guidance of a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and in collaboration with Special Education teachers, the RBT implements evidence-based strategies to reduce maladaptive behaviors and increase functional skills.
Direct Intervention: Implement individualized Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) techniques (e.g., Discrete Trial Training, Natural Environment Training) to support student goals outlined in IEPs.
Data Collection & Analysis: Accurately track, record, and graph behavioral data (frequency, duration, ABC data) using school-based data systems to monitor student progress and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
Crisis Management: De-escalate student behaviors using research-based strategies; provide safe physical holds only when students exhibit behaviors that are unsafe to themselves or others, in strict accordance with training and school policy.
Collaboration: Actively participate in Student Support Team (SST) and MDT/IEP meetings; provide objective feedback to teachers, BCBAs, and families regarding student progress and challenges.
Skill Acquisition: Teach functional replacement behaviors, social-emotional skills, and activities of daily living (ADLs) to foster independence within the classroom and school community.
Environment Support: Assist the classroom teacher in creating a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment; model evidence-based behavior strategies for Paraprofessionals and other instructional staff.
Professionalism: Maintain strict confidentiality in adherence to FERPA and HIPAA laws; fulfill standards of professionalism including appropriate dress, attendance, and timeliness.
Qualifications
Certification: Active National Certification as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) as issued by the BACB is required to be obtained within 90 days of starting employment.
Education: High School diploma or GED required; degree in related field (psychology, special education etc.) preferred
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience working directly with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), emotional/behavioral disorders, or intellectual disabilities in a school or clinical setting is preferred
Skills: Strong understanding of ABA principles; ability to stay calm in stressful or crisis situations; excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective team collaboration.
