Summer Educational Specialist at Fort Greene Prep
University Settlement partners with 40,000 New Yorkers on the Lower East Side and in Brooklyn every year to build on their strengths as they achieve healthy, stable, and remarkable lives. For 135 years, we’ve collaborated with our communities to pioneer highly effective programs that fight poverty and systemic inequality. Established in 1886 as the first Settlement House in the United States, we bring the values of that movement into the 21st century by meeting New Yorkers where they live, listening to their perspectives, recognizing their excellence, understanding them as complete individuals, and creating space for them to organize. Joining together with our neighbors to advocate for justice and equality, we help build community strength.
We work with New Yorkers of all ages. We infuse a commitment to civic engagement, equity, and communal action into each of our programs, which include early childhood education, mental health and wellness, benefits assistance and eviction prevention, adult literacy and education, healthy aging, community, and recreation centers, performing and visual arts, and youth development.
Responsibilities:
Act as a primary liaison between after-school staff and school- day staff to ensure the programs’ alignment with school- day curriculum
In conjunction with program director, develop and select curricula appropriate for the developmental needs of children in an after-school setting
In conjunction with program director, develop and participate in high quality, relevant staff training
Work in collaboration with the site coordinator to identify themes and objectives aligned to school curriculum
Researches and coordinates the use of age appropriate, standards-based curriculum (e.g. thematic or project-based) to ensure participants are learning through a variety of fun and engaging activities;
Facilitates staff development sessions with Group Leaders and Activity Specialists to review curriculum materials and ensure understanding of content;
Assists the staff (Group Leaders and Activity Specialists) by providing educational resources and sharing best practices for successful implementation of selected curriculum;
Periodically conducts activity observations, providing feedback to staff, and uses observation assessments to inform ongoing professional development topics
Consults with school administration to identify and implement assessment methods to measure effectiveness of educational programs administered
strengthen basic literacy and numeracy skills and stimulate the interest of children in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) subjects
Other duties as assigned by the Director
Qualification:
BA Degree in related field required; NYS Teaching License and Master’s preferred.
Experience in an administrative role in an after school program or another type of community-based program
Strong interpersonal skills, problem solving ability, and crisis intervention skills
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and in presentation formats
Ability to work independently and as a member of a collaborative management team
Ability to think creatively, encourage enthusiasm, and develop outstanding programs.
Strong comprehension of NYC Department of Education Learning Standards, including the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts.
Experience in curriculum planning, development and writing.
Solid training and facilitation skills.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, verbal, and written communications skills and ability to work with staff of various skill-sets across disciplines.

We infuse a commitment to civic engagement, equity, and communal action into each of our programs, which include early childhood education, mental health and wellness, benefits assistance and eviction prevention, adult literacy and education, healthy aging, community, and recreation centers, performing and visual arts, and youth development. \\n\\n \\n\\nResponsibilities: \\n\\n\\n\\t\\n\\tAct as a primary liaison between after-school staff and school- day staff to ensure the programs’ alignment with school- day curriculum \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tIn conjunction with program director, develop and select curricula appropriate for the developmental needs of children in an after-school setting \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tIn conjunction with program director, develop and participate in high quality, relevant staff training \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tWork in collaboration with the site coordinator to identify themes and objectives aligned to school curriculum \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tResearches and coordinates the use of age appropriate, standards-based curriculum (e.g. thematic or project-based) to ensure participants are learning through a variety of fun and engaging activities; \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tFacilitates staff development sessions with Group Leaders and Activity Specialists to review curriculum materials and ensure understanding of content; \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tAssists the staff (Group Leaders and Activity Specialists) by providing educational resources and sharing best practices for successful implementation of selected curriculum; \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tPeriodically conducts activity observations, providing feedback to staff, and uses observation assessments to inform ongoing professional development topics \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tConsults with school administration to identify and implement assessment methods to measure effectiveness of educational programs administered \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tstrengthen basic literacy and numeracy skills and stimulate the interest of children in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) subjects \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tOther duties as assigned by the Director \\n\\t\\n\\n\\n \\n\\nQualification: \\n\\n\\n\\t\\n\\tBA Degree in related field required; NYS Teaching License and Master’s preferred. \\n\\t\\n\\n\\n\\n\\t\\n\\tExperience in an administrative role in an after school program or another type of community-based program \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tStrong interpersonal skills, problem solving ability, and crisis intervention skills \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tAbility to communicate effectively in writing and in presentation formats \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tAbility to work independently and as a member of a collaborative management team \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tAbility to think creatively, encourage enthusiasm, and develop outstanding programs. \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tStrong comprehension of NYC Department of Education Learning Standards, including the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tExperience in curriculum planning, development and writing. \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tSolid training and facilitation skills. \\n\\t\\n\\t\\n\\tExcellent analytical, problem-solving, verbal, and written communications skills and ability to work with staff of various skill-sets across disciplines. \\n\\t\\n\\n\\n \\n\\n \\n\\nWe are committed to building a diverse and inclusive community.
