Description
Under the direction of the Student Health and Counseling Services Assistant Director, this position fosters students' academic and personal success by providing counseling triage, supporting clinical staff, identifying and responding to students in crisis, and making appropriate referrals. This position facilitates communication within SHCS, across the institution, and between the institution and health care providers. This position works closely with the Wellness Educator to develop and implement health promotion and prevention programs that address campus wellness trends and priorities and to reduce personal, campus, and community wellness risk factors.
Responsibilities
Clinical Services:
Provide counseling triage and assess students for mental, emotional, or substance abuse concerns.
Conduct and interpret mental health assessments to identify appropriate sources of care.
Support students in navigating campus and community resources and follow up with students who miss scheduled appointments.
Document client encounters and treatment interventions in the electronic health record.
Collaborate with inter-professional staff to ensure continuity of care, maintain cooperative relationships among clinical staff, and contribute to the quality and effectiveness of SHCS services.
Crisis Intervention:
Serve as coordinator of the Crisis Response Team and as a member of the CARE Team.
Provide crisis intervention for students experiencing mental health or emotional distress.
Participate in crisis on-call rotation and be responsive and available to students in crisis.
Coordinate follow-up with parents, faculty, and administrators to support students in resuming their studies, seeking a leave of absence, or withdrawing when necessary.
Communicate and coordinate across SHCS staff to ensure continuity of care in crisis response.
Campus and Community Outreach and Engagement:
Engage students, faculty, staff, and community stakeholders to promote wellness and create supportive environments for student success.
Develop, plan, coordinate, and implement wellness-focused prevention and educational programs using evidence-informed practices.
Build and maintain productive relationships with campus and community partners to garner resources and collaborative support.
Ensure broad access to programs by considering developmental and demographic profiles of the student population and by using diverse formats and strategies.
Disseminate program information and contribute to advancing an institutional and community climate of wellness, inclusion, and social justice
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience (may include internships).
Experience assessing and coordinating care for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.
Demonstrated knowledge of the developmental counseling model and crisis response leadership.
Demonstrated experience working with a multidisciplinary team and collaborating with other professionals (for example, in this context, Student Affairs, Residential Life, health care providers) to support students.
Ability to build and maintain collaborative partnerships with campus and community stakeholders to support student wellness and engagement.
Demonstrated skill in designing, implementing, and evaluating outreach and prevention programs using evidence-informed practices.
Electronic Medical Records and basic computer knowledge and skills, including timely and professional documentation.
Demonstrated public speaking; group facilitation; writing and communication skills.
Knowledgeable in health and wellness topics relevant to traditional and non-traditional college students.
Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekend and after hours.
Knowledgeable regarding codes and laws relevant to services.
Preferred Qualifications
Two years of experience in a mental health wellness focused agency.
Knowledge and relationships with local health care providers.
Prior experience in a university setting.
Experience developing and implementing wellness, prevention, or outreach programming for young adults or campus populations.
Demonstrated knowledge of the mental health concerns of university students, student development theory, and university or college counseling best practices on a residential college campus.
