Description

Overview Founded in 1898 and headquartered in Chicago, IL, GATX Corporation (NYSE: GATX) is an industry leader with 125+ years of success—success that is powered by our people. We are proud of our high-performance culture, hard-working and enthusiastic management team, and beautiful office space in the Willis Tower. At GATX, we hire the best and offer our employees a dynamic, energetic, collaborative environment to enable them to make an impact from day one. Enjoy the perks and benefits of a global company with the close-knit culture and community of a much smaller one. In the same way we strive to empower our customers to propel the world forward, we are dedicated to providing our people with the tools and resources they need to advance in their careers. This position is responsible for actively managing 10-20,000 freight or tank cars across several of the GATX North American fleets which serve various key rail markets. Working with other groups within the GATX commercial team, the incumbent will make decisions surrounding lease structuring (rate, term other T’s&C’s), and remarketing opportunities across their fleets, and also is involved in new and secondary markets investment, and supply agreement allocation. The position works closely with Sales, Structured Finance, Investment Analysis, Operations, Engineering/Quality, Service Delivery, and most other areas across GATX. While we are posting for both a Sr. Analyst, Portfolio Management and a Manager, Portfolio Management position, the title will be determined based on demonstrated experience and fit with the job qualifications. Only one role, of these two, will be filled. Responsibilities Manage the full assignment process for designated product codes/fleets, including responding to inquiries, quoting lease opportunities, and executing placement of railcars on lease. Evaluate equipment suitability, including mechanical and economic feasibility of modifications, and negotiate lease terms (rate, duration, and associated costs such as alterations, freight, and preparation). Develop working knowledge of customer specifications, railcar types, components, and applicable DOT/FRA regulatory requirements. Manage lease renewal transactions, including negotiating new rates, terms, and conditions in alignment with internal guidelines. Identify opportunities to enhance value through early renewals, bundled transactions, and other strategic structuring approaches. Monitor and interpret market conditions, customer trends, fleet needs, and potential remarketing or release costs. Support strategic initiatives to maximize fleet returns and drive profitable growth through analysis and project work. Perform financial and operational analysis to support fleet planning, budgeting, forecasting, investment recommendations, and asset disposition decisions. Provide decision support on capital expenditures, railcar conversions, and end-of-life (ERL) considerations. Collaborate on cross-functional teams and contribute to reporting, planning, and continuous improvement initiatives. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree 5+ years of experience (rail industry or equipment leasing) preferred Basic knowledge of railcars (operational or financial) preferred Understanding of basic principles of finance is strongly preferred Ability to take ownership of multiple activities, while achieving results in a fast-paced environment Ability to take responsibility for successfully completing commercial transactions Willingness to independently make decisions, exercise judgment, and have responsibility for them, while only having partial, ambiguous, or incomplete information Ability to interpret market information provided, and negotiate for optimal outcome Entrepreneurial attitude and initiative, and the ability to create value without the benefit of a detailed roadmap Travel requirements are flexible and will evolve as the individual defines his or her approach to the role. Travel might be as frequent as 3-4 times per year. This position is based in the Chicago Corporate office and considered hybrid with 60% in office attendance required. Minimal travel to maintenance facilities and industry committee meetings will be required, and employee must be physically able to climb on, inside, or under rail cars. This is a hybrid position that will require the employee to work in the office at least 3 days a week throughout the year. Posting Duration This posting will remain open until the role is filled. As of the post date, the salary range for this position is: Min USD $80,800.00/Yr. Max USD $113,000.00/Yr. This role may be eligible to participate in the Company’s short-term incentive plan, the details of which will be provided to the applicant upon hire. This range is a reasonable estimate and takes into account several factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to, geographic location, skill set, experience, education, training, internal equity, and other business needs.
