Description

This position is funded through either department funds or Federal Work-Study (FWS) funds. Students who are not eligible for FWS are still encouraged to apply, as department funding may be available. Supervisor: Logan Haak (Director of Recreation) Hunter Rud (Assistant Director of Recreation) Hours Per Week: Minimum 5 hours a week Location: On Campus Application Deadline: Open until filled Position Duration: Academic Year Position Overview The Recreation Center Assistant is a dynamic, dual-role position responsible for supporting both the daily operations of the weight room and the administrative functions of the recreation center office. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about health and wellness, enjoy engaging with diverse populations, and can balance hands-on supervision with organizational and customer service responsibilities. In these positions you will be trained and scheduled in a rotating fashion that is adaptable to your academic and personal schedules that allow you to work in both areas based on availability. In the weight room, the assistant helps maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment by monitoring facility usage, enforcing policies, assisting patrons with equipment, and promoting proper exercise techniques. They contribute to the overall cleanliness and organization of the space while serving as a visible and approachable resource for participants. In the office setting, the assistant supports front desk operations, including member services, program registration, answering inquiries, and handling basic administrative tasks. This portion of the role requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities efficiently. Across both areas, our Recreation Center Assistant plays a key role in enhancing the user experience, fostering a positive community atmosphere, and upholding the mission and values of campus recreation. Major Areas of Responsibility: Weight Room Assistant Supervise the weight room floor to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. Assist patrons with equipment use and answer general fitness-related questions Enforce facility policies and respond to issues or concerns as they arise Maintain organization and cleanliness of fitness equipment and workout spaces Provide customer service at the front desk, including check-ins and answering questions Support program registration and handle basic administrative tasks Communicate effectively with staff and patrons to keep operations running smoothly Help create a positive and inclusive environment for all rec center users Working Conditions Temperate Weight Room Setting Required Qualifications Recommended but not required: (+CPR Training) Physical Requirements Must be able to lift and hold 50+ pounds. Must be able and willing to demonstrate skills in a weight room setting if inquired by user Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
