Description
Overview:
The Juilliard School is accepting applications for full-time faculty in the Department of Music History to begin in Fall 2026.
The department teaches courses to graduate and undergraduate students with a focus on the Western classical tradition, as well as the full range of music and cultures that intersect with it. Undergraduates must complete a three-semester survey core and electives, whose topics vary widely. Graduate students (MM and DMA) must complete courses on diverse topics.
The salary range for this role is $94,000 - $100,000 per year.
Working at Juilliard
Founded in 1905, The Juilliard School is a world leader in performing arts education. The school’s mission is to provide the highest caliber of artistic education for gifted musicians, dancers, and actors from around the world so that they may achieve their fullest potential as artists, leaders, and global citizens.
Excellence and professionalism are important guides in how we go about our work, but we also connect to the mission as individuals in the workplace. We thrive because of our variety of backgrounds and our ability to be open and honest, and we also thrive because we enjoy each other’s company. We believe that each community member has the responsibility to help shape the Juilliard culture. Our organizational values focus on excellence, creative enterprise, and equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
We encourage you to read more about how we achieve our mission on our website, juilliard.edu.
Responsibilities and details:
The successful candidate will teach core and elective courses for undergraduate and graduate students, a total of three courses per semester. Specific courses will be determined based upon departmental need and the successful candidate’s specialties and interests. Non-core course topics will generally involve (but not necessarily be confined to) Western classical music.
Given these requirements, candidates with demonstrable expertise in any broad area of common practice classical music are encouraged to apply, particularly those with the following areas of specialty: opera from the eighteenth century to the present, especially that of Italy or Germany; other staged artforms and related fields, such as dance, musical theater, and dramaturgy; performance studies; and new critical perspectives in twenty-first-century musicology.
In addition to teaching duties, the successful candidate will be expected to stay up-to-date with current scholarship, participate in department meetings as well as departmental and school-wide committees, hold regular office hours, and be available to meet with students as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates should have in hand the Ph.D. in Musicology or a related field prior to starting employment.
Demonstrated success in college-level teaching.
Preferred Additional Qualifications:
A background in performance or composition, or proficiency with a musical instrument, including voice, is helpful.
Application requirements:
Qualified candidates should submit:
A letter of interest that includes a brief discussion of teaching experience, current scholarship, and approaches to teaching and research.
Resume or curriculum vitae
One-page statement of teaching philosophy
All materials should be received by December 5, 2025. Late applications may be considered until the position is filled. The interview process will include meeting(s) with the hiring committee, followed by a teaching demonstration and research presentation.
Nondiscrimination Policy:
The Juilliard School is committed to a policy of equal treatment and opportunity in every aspect of its relations with its faculty, staff, students, and other members of the Juilliard community, and does not discriminate on the basis of actual or perceived race, color, religion, creed, age, sex, national origin, alienage, ancestry, citizenship, sexual orientation or preference, gender identity, physical or mental disability, medical condition, predisposing genetic characteristics, marital status, partnership status, or any other basis prohibited by applicable local, state, or federal law. This nondiscrimination policy covers, but is not limited to, recruitment, hiring, training, benefits, rates of pay and other forms of compensation as well as student admission, access, and treatment in school programs and activities.
