Description
Description
As a Principal Satellite Systems Engineer at Honeywell Aerospace, you will play a critical role on a cross-disciplinary team that specializes in the design, development, and manufacturing of novel, state-of-the-art optical and science instruments for military, government, and commercial space applications, including Earth observation, atmospheric monitoring, space situational awareness, maritime traffic monitoring, and optical communications. You will be integral in creating solutions (including embedded software) solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers. You will be involved in every aspect of the mission development life cycle, from the front end of business development through product end-of-life.
You will report directly to our Sr Engineering Manager, and you’ll work out of our Cambridge, Ontario location.
In this role, you will collaborate with stakeholders to define system requirements, design spacecraft (bus, payload, and software) and ground station architecture, and ensure the successful implementation, testing and delivery of projects. Your technical skills will be crucial in driving the development of reliable and high-performance space applications. Your expertise in satellite systems engineering, design, integration, testing, and technical leadership will be instrumental in shaping the future of technology and space exploration.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership, guidance, and support on development programs as part of a highly engaged and integrated engineering team involving systems, software, electrical, optical, and mechanical disciplines. Lead end-to-end mission design, executing trades between spacecraft bus capabilities, instrument payload performance, and flight/ground software architectures. Develop satellite on-board computer (OBC) and payload computer embedded software and ground software applications for satellite systems. Define interfaces between the spacecraft bus, payload instruments, and ground segments, creating comprehensive Interface Control Documents (ICDs). Translate customer mission needs (e.g. earth observation, optical communications) into system-level requirements, flowing them down to hardware sub-systems and software components. Create architecture, detailed design, and test plan documentation, to meet program and customer needs. Lead software and high-level system architectural studies and operational concepts to define and select appropriate designs. Lead design verification and validation activities across the system. Perform simulation and analyses and develop system-level models to ensure end-to-end performance requirements are met. Lead technical feasibility, readiness, and risk analysis assessments, and provide estimates of cost and schedule. Provide technical support to customers, including briefings and conference presentations. Develop documentation according to space agency standards (i.e. Canadian Space Agency, NASA, and ESA). Prepare proposals for new business pursuits and draft white papers. Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure alignment on project objectives and progress. Implement and enforce quality control measures to ensure the reliability and safety of software.
Qualifications
The annual base salary range for this position is $143,000-190,000 in Ontario. Please note that this salary information serves as a general guideline. Honeywell considers various factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education and training, key skills, as well as market and business considerations.

You Must Have
Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. 8+ years of experience in a technical software lead role involving complex software and/or systems engineering projects, at least half of which is within the Space industry. 4+ years of experience architecting embedded software solutions, at least half of which is within the Space industry. We Value
Knowledge of satellite systems, Space software/electronics, spacecraft attitude dynamics and control, orbital mechanics, satellite communications, physics, optics, quantum mechanics, and/or encryption technologies. Direct experience leading or contributing to Phase 0/A/B mission studies and formal government/commercial proposals. Familiarity with spacecraft sub-systems (ADCS, EPS, TT&C) and their integration with optical or science payloads. Familiarity with CCSDS standards. Experience using mission design and simulation tools like STK (Systems Tool Kit), MATLAB, or equivalent orbital mechanics software. Manage system-level budgets (e.g. mass, power, data rate, link budget, and pointing error) to ensure baseline feasibility during early-phase studies and proposals. Comprehensive knowledge of software development methodologies and tools involving both embedded software and application-level software. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, to effectively communicate technical information across different levels of the organization and externally. Self-motivation and the ability to work with little supervision, consistently taking the initiative to get things done. Experience with product development and knowledge of industry best practices and emerging technologies in the Aerospace/Space industry. Experience with embedded Linux/UNIX. Experience with safety-critical software and systems development. Understanding of various software development lifecycle models. Experience using mission design and simulation tools like STK (Systems Tool Kit), MATLAB, or equivalent orbital mechanics software.
