Description

Duties: Under the supervision of Buildings & Grounds supervisor of the school facilities and energy conservation management; under supervision of an employee of higher grade, inspects buildings and/or grounds for safety, security, cleanliness and fire hazards and to determine and report the need for maintenance and repair; maintains, adjusts, and performs preventive maintenance on the heating, ventilating, and grounds; opens and/or secures buildings; determines the amount of supplies to be kept on hand; requisitions and issues supplies and/or takes inventory of supplies, accepts delivery of sorts and stores supplies and/or equipment and inspects storage areas for proper placement; orders fuel and checks delivery; evaluates and tests the performance of custodial products and outside services; contacts police and fire departments in emergency situations; checks fluid in batteries of emergency lighting equipment; sets up furniture and equipment; replaces light bulbs and fuses; replenishes rest room supplies, collects and disposes of building trash; sweeps, mops, waxes and/or seals floors, and maintains carpets, washes walls, furniture, windows and equipment, and brass; cleans and/or lubricates tools and equipment; cuts grass and rakes leaves; shovels snow and/or sand, and salts building grounds, catch basins, overpasses, etc.; operates or uses hand tools and cleaning equipment; supervises directly or indirectly one or more custodians, handymen, maintenance workers or laborers; prepares work schedules and assigns work; provides in-service training and performs related duties as required. Inspects work and directs corrective action if needed. Responsible for discipline of building custodians. Makes oral and written reports to supervisors. Performs other duties as assigned. This is a safety sensitive position Qualifications: Must have at least one year of full time, or equivalent part time, experience in building custodial or institutional housekeeping work or any equivalent combination. Must be able to receive and interpret written and oral instructions. Must be able to submit written and oral reports to an employee of a higher grade. Must have ability to use tools of trade in a workmanlike manner. Must possess a valid class d driver’s license. Work Environment: Work requires agility and physical strength, ability to function in close quarters, and is subject to noise, vibrations, hazards and atmospheric conditions including fumes, dust and air contaminants. Some exposure to outside environmental conditions in performance of job duties, including wet, hot and cold weather. Physical and Mental Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the position’s essential functions. Physical Skills Position requires standing/walking most of the day, lifting/carrying up to 75 lbs, pushing/pulling, climbing, reaching, twisting, turning, sweeping, kneeling, bending, crouching and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position requires near and far vision and acute hearing, the ability to maintain physical exertion for long periods of time, climb ladders and stairs, and operate hand and power tools and equipment. Motor Skills While performing the duties, employees are regularly required to use oral communication skills and handle tools and equipment. The position requires balancing, pushing, pulling, grasping, feeling and repetitive motion to complete tasks. Visual Skills Visual acuity is required to survey working environment and operate equipment and tools.
