Description
The Head Softball Coach is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and administration of the University of Tulsa’s NCAA Division I Softball program. This includes responsibility for competitive success, recruitment and retention of student-athletes, academic achievement, compliance with NCAA and conference regulations, and fostering a positive culture aligned with the mission and values of Tulsa Athletics.
The Head Coach is expected to lead a program that competes at a championship level while promoting the holistic development and well-being of student-athletes.
Job Responsibilities:
Program Leadership & Coaching
Direct all aspects of the softball program, including practice planning, game strategy, and player development Establish and communicate program philosophy, culture, and performance standards Develop and implement training programs that maximize student-athlete performance and safety Analyze team and opponent performance to inform strategy and development Recruiting & Roster Management
Develop and execute a comprehensive recruiting strategy to attract and retain high-quality student-athletes Identify, evaluate, and maintain communication with prospective student-athletes in accordance with NCAA rules Manage roster composition, including scholarship allocation and transfer portal strategy Foster relationships with high school, club, and junior college coaches Student-Athlete Development & Welfare
Promote academic success, retention, and graduation of student-athletes Monitor academic progress and collaborate with academic support staff Support the personal, leadership, and professional development of student-athletes Maintain an environment that prioritizes health, safety, and overall well-being Compliance & Administration
Ensure full compliance with NCAA, conference, and University rules and regulations Promote a culture of compliance and accountability within the program and coaching staff Maintain accurate and timely documentation related to recruiting, eligibility, and program operations Understand that the Head Coach is responsible for the conduct of all staff and program activities Staff Leadership & Program Management
Hire, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches and support staff Foster a positive and collaborative working environment Oversee scheduling, travel planning, equipment, and day-to-day operations Prepare and manage the program’s operating budget in accordance with department guidelines External Relations & Revenue Generation
Promote the softball program through community engagement, media relations, and donor interaction Support fundraising initiatives, camps, and clinics Represent Tulsa Athletics in a professional and positive manner at all times Collaborate with internal units (communications, development, marketing) to enhance program visibility
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree, or related experience required (Master’s preferred) Significant collegiate coaching experience, preferably at the Division I level Demonstrated success in recruiting and developing student-athletes Strong knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations Proven leadership, communication, and organizational skills Preferred Qualifications
Head coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level Record of competitive success (conference championships, postseason participation) Experience managing budgets and staff Commitment to student-athlete academic and personal development Required Competencies
