JOB TITLE:
Phlebotomist
JOB PURPOSE:
Draws blood from patients and prepares specimens for screening, analysis, or other medical purposes. Collects all sample specimens and labels accordingly. May assist physician/resident/practitioner with routine medical procedures or provide coverage for other areas.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform basic reception duties: answer telephone calls, take and transfer messages, screen individuals/calls, refer to the appropriate source, schedule appointments, and answer standard questions (escalating complex ones as directed).
Perform basic records maintenance: routine record keeping, compiling, searching, numbering, and purging information/documents according to established procedures.
Perform basic typing and word processing: edit data for accuracy, make necessary corrections, and perform data entry.
Operate photocopier, fax, and other office machines.
Perform administrative functions in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Assist with electronic documentation and ensure compliance with HIPAA requirements.
Assemble equipment for phlebotomy (tourniquet, needles, sharps containers, collection devices, gauze, cotton, alcohol, etc.) according to test or procedure requirements.
Perform phlebotomy and operate equipment under the supervision of a Laboratory Technologist.
Verify or record patient/donor identity and provide reassurance to allay fear of the procedure.
Prepare appropriate specimens for culture and transport.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
Must have appropriate technical, interpersonal and computer proficiency.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: 1 year work-related experience as a phlebotomist
Required licensure, certification, registration, or other requirements:
A graduate of an accredited phlebotomy program and/or must have documented experience as a phlebotomist.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
