Description SUMMARY: This position is primarily responsible for performing preventative and corrective maintenance, as directed by the Truck Shop foreman, on vehicles ranging from autos and pickups through class 8 trucks and trailers, knuckle-boom cranes, forklifts, small motor driven equipment and other rental equipment. While assuring shop and field work compliance with all regulatory standards, the Truck Shop mechanic is also responsible for maintaining equipment operation by completing inspections and preventive maintenance requirements, correcting vehicle deficiencies and by making adjustments and alignments. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Follow all company and truck shop safety rules. Participate in safety meetings and branch audits. Promote and actively participate in the company Health and Environmental, Safety and Security Programs. Maintain equipment operation by completing inspections and preventive maintenance requirements, correcting vehicle deficiencies and by making adjustments and alignments. Determine vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests, identifying worn and damaged parts. Keep equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules, and by performing corrective maintenance as required by work order priorities. Correct vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics and suspensions. Verify vehicle performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems. Comply with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards. Maintain vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting. Maintain vehicle records by recording services and repairs on work orders and by notifying the shop foreman of repair requirements. Keep shop equipment in safe operating condition by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies and performing preventive maintenance. Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical and regulation publications. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This job has no supervisory responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS: High school degree, diploma or a GED equivalent qualification from an accredited institution. Bachelor’s degree or an associate’s degree or diploma in mechanical or automotive engineering or any other related field of study, with 2 – 3 years of experience of working as a fleet mechanic. Certificates, licenses and registrations required: Must possess a valid and clean commercial Class A Driver's License issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Knowledge of engines, transmissions and controls Knowledge of brakes and suspensions Skilled in diagnosis and repair of electrical systems on trucks and equipment Skilled in DOT inspections Other skills required: Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills Demonstrated ability to anticipate and solve practical problems COMPETENCIES: Ethics - Treats people with respect; Keeps commitments; Inspires the trust of others; Works with integrity and ethically; Upholds organizational values. Attendance/Punctuality - Is consistently at work and on time; Ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent; Arrives at meetings and appointments on time. Technical Skills - Assesses own strengths and weaknesses; Pursues training and development opportunities; Strives to continuously build knowledge and skills; Shares expertise with others. Judgement - Displays willingness to make decisions; Exhibits sound and accurate judgment; Supports and explains reasoning for decisions; Includes appropriate people in decision-making process; Makes timely decisions. Safety and Security - Observes safety and security procedures; Determines appropriate action beyond guidelines; Reports potentially unsafe conditions; Uses equipment and materials properly. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Frequently required to stand Occasionally required to walk Frequently required to sit Continually required to utilize hand and finger dexterity Occasionally required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crawl Continually required to talk or hear Continually works near moving mechanical parts Occasionally works in high, precarious places Continually exposed to outside weather conditions While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Be physically able to routinely lift 70 pounds but are expected to not lift anything over 50 pounds on a recurring basis. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: Close vision; Distance vision; Color vision; Peripheral vision; Depth perception and ability to adjust focus The employee must frequently wear Trench Shoring Company mandated safety equipment (including but not limited to high-visibility vest, hard helmet, approved safety glasses and safety-toe boots).
