Description

This is a year round open position for ongoing recruitment purposes. ABOUT OUR SCHOOL Atlanta International School (AIS) offers the full  International Baccalaureate  (IB) continuum to all students, from 3K through grade 12. Our challenging academic programs develop internationally-minded, critical-thinking students able to take complex and often disparate knowledge, concepts and skills, and forge these into new and unique ways of solving problems. We provide a rigorous education in a diverse, multicultural, multilinguistic community where the reality and hope of human potential are in action. Our  mission at AIS  is to develop courageous leaders who shape their world for the better. All AIS employees believe deeply in the potential of each student, value critical thinking (their own and students’) and know learning can be fun and exciting. AIS offers an incredible spirit of community and diversity of perspectives that come from students, families, and employees representing more than 90 nationalities and over 60 languages. Our school is committed to the safety and well-being of every child. We maintain rigorous safeguarding practices to ensure a secure, supportive, and nurturing environment where all students can thrive. POSITION DESCRIPTION AIS is looking for instructors to join our Afterschool Heritage Language program in the following languages: Greek, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian or Swahili. The teacher will lead a class in that is composed of beginners and mixed ages (5 to 10 years old). The class group is small (3 to 8 students). Students have a cultural connection to the language but may not have language competency at the start of the course. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES Provide opportunities for use of oral language skills. Develop cultural connections (literary, musical, customary, etc.). Engage students’ families in the program to establish a bridge between school and home identity. Use and develop student reading and writing skills in context. Engage students through STEAM-based (science, art, etc.) problem-solving activities once students have reached a level when they have developed basic communication skills. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS Native speaker of Greek, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian or Swahili (please specify which language in your application).  Experience working with elementary school aged children. Background in teaching or language acquisition desirable. Passionate about connecting language with culture.  Must be flexible, engaging, open-minded and comfortable leading an active group of students in an inquiry-based environment.  The school will provide curriculum guidelines with the expectation that tutors will contribute to the development of the curriculum specific to language components. ADDITIONAL DETAILS 3-4 weekly afternoon hours from 3:00-4:45 PM. Paid team meetings as needed. $50 per hour. Technologically savvy with Zoom. Commitment signed each semester. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Atlanta International School is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The School’s current COVID-19 Immunization Proof and Testing policy states that all employees are required to submit proof of COVID-19 immunization or participate in regular COVID-19 testing. Regular testing opportunities are provided by the School on campus. EEO AIS is an equal opportunity employer. We are a diverse community of professionals that broadly reflects the people of the metropolitan Atlanta area and the United States at large. We aim to align our hiring process with our mission and institutional goals. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, religion or religious practices, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, citizenship status, national origin, age, ability status, military status, unemployment status or any other category protected by applicable local, state, or federal laws. AIS takes affirmative action in support of its policy to employ and advance all qualified candidates. We will contact those applicants whose skills and experience best match our needs. Due to the high volume of applications, we regret that we are not able to take or return phone calls regarding employment.
