Wabanaki Public Health & Wellness (WPHW) is growing, and we are excited to be adding new people to our team! WPHW is a non-profit organization that serves four federally recognized tribes located in five communities: the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Aroostook Band of Mi'kmaq, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point, and the Penobscot Nation. Wabanaki traditions, language, and culture guide our approach and describe the ways we live in harmony with each other and the land we collectively share. Services are available to community members living on and off-reservation across the State of Maine.
Position Summary :
The Healthy Living Manager leads culturally centered health and wellness initiatives that uplift indigenous knowledge, traditions and community strengths. This position is responsible for developing, coordinating and evaluating programs that promote healthy eating, active living and commercial tobacco prevention across Indigenous communities. They work collaboratively with Tribal Leaders, Elders, youth community organizations and health professionals to ensure programming is respectful, community driven and aligned with cultural values. The Healthy Living Manger leads a team of five Healthy Living Educators. They are supervised by the Director of Our Sacred Relations and work alongside the Food Sovereignty and Environmental Health Teams.
Duties and Responsibilities :
Design and implement community events, campaigns and community programs that promote:
Traditional and contemporary healthy eating practices that support overall holistic health and family wellness
Increased opportunities for active living.
Commercial tobacco prevention and cessation, while honoring traditional tobacco as a sacred medicine.
Indigenous worldviews, cultural teachings and Wabanaki languages.
Develop workplans, reports, presentations and educational materials that align with programming and community needs.
Manage program budgets and programming supplies/inventory.
Collect and analyze data to measure program outcomes, using culturally appropriate evaluation methods.
Build strong relationships with Tribal communities, Elders, knowledge sharers, other community partners.
Support capacity-building by training community members, youth leaders, and partner staff in culturally grounded health promotion strategies.
Supervise Healthy living educator team staff and interns.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Required :
Preferred Indigenous lived experience or experience working in Indigenous Communities.
Preferred bachelor’s degree in public health related field.
Must have valid Maine Driver’s License along with;
The ability to be insured under organization’s auto insurance policy.
Access to reliable transportation
Ability to work flexible hours after regular work schedule, including weekends or evening events
Skills and Qualifications Required :
Excellent organization and communication skills.
Experience working with Tribal communities is preferred.
Experience using Microsoft office products including Word and Excel.
The ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently.
Must pass criminal background check.
