POSITION PURPOSE</p><p></p><p>Reporting to the Director of Recreation or their designee, the On-Call Lifeguards are responsible for protecting the safety of patrons using the Sullivan Aquatic Center. They are primarily responsible for monitoring the pool and surrounding area to prevent potential accidents by ensuring adherence to policies and procedures. Campus Recreation is committed to the Jesuit ideal of educating the whole person- body, mind, and spirit. Campus Recreation seeks to fulfill this commitment by providing services that enrich the lives of the SCU community through a broad scope of recreational, educational, and competitive programming.</p><p></p><p><u>The On-Call Lifeguard position is a fixed-term appointment for the summer months, beginning in <b>June</b> and concluding in <b>September</b>.</u></p><p></p><p>B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</p><ul><li><p>Ensure safe and responsible operation of aquatic facilities at all times. This includes tarping at opening and closing shifts.</p></li><li><p>Respond to, and initiate all emergency action procedures.</p></li><li><p>Prevent injuries, eliminate hazards, and render first aid and/or CPR as needed.</p></li><li><p>Possess good posture while sitting in the lifeguard stand.  Be alert and constantly scanning to what is happening in the pool area to anticipate problems before they occur.</p></li><li><p>Enforce all General and Aquatic Center policies. Provide positive public relations and policy education to participants.</p></li><li><p>Attend and contribute to all in-services, staff trainings, and meetings.<br />Provide a friendly, welcoming, inclusive, service-oriented environment.</p></li><li><p>Maintain the pool and surrounding area.</p></li><li><p>Represent the Campus Recreation in a professional manner at all times.</p></li><li><p>Assist with creating a culture of sustainability for the Campus Recreation program and campus by helping to fashion a more just, humane, and sustainable world.</p><p></p></li></ul><p>C.   QUALIFICATIONS</p><p>To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The items below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience required or preferred.</p><p></p><p>Required Qualifications:</p><ul><li><p><span>Currently certified in American Red Cross or equivalent (ARC) Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid.</span></p></li><li><p><span>Willingness and ability to work early morning, night, weekend, finals, and quarter break hours.</span></p></li><li><p><span>18 years of age or older.</span></p></li><li><p><span>Pass the Campus Recreation aquatic swim test: </span>When Campus Recreation is hiring for the lifeguard position, a mandatory swim test will be scheduled.  Applicants must attend and successfully complete this test in order to be considered for interviews.  The test includes a 300 yard swim, 2 minute water tread, and demonstration of ARC Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR skills.</p></li></ul><p></p><p>Preferred Qualifications:</p><ul><li><p>Genuine interest in a variety of individuals and commitment to providing quality service.</p></li><li><p>Previous experience in aquatics and/ or lifeguarding.</p></li><li><p>Advanced/specialized safety certifications.</p></li><li><p>Candidates should be reliable, self-motivated, able to perform multi-tasks, and respond quickly in an emergency.</p></li></ul></div><p><b><span style=\"font-size:10pt\">Telecommute</span></b></p><p><span style=\"font-size:10pt\">Santa Clara University is registered to do business in the following states: California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, and Illinois.
