Job Summary:
The Specialized Program Counselor is responsible for designing, planning, and instructing lesson plans for slingshots, archery, tomahawk throwing, and riflery (if they possess the certification), as well as high and low ropes course. The Specialized Program Counselor ensures that all shooting sports activities occur in a safe and age-appropriate manner and hold relevant certifications. The Specialized Program Counselor also assists the Camp Director with other duties related to programming and camper supervision. Supporting kitchen meal-prep for weekend programming for groups of 30-60 people.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: (Additional duties may be assigned)
Attend and assist with mandatory Staff training.
Attend and contribute to planning and staff meetings.
Oversee the Shooting Sports program area and all shooting sports equipment; ensure the shooting sports program area is stocked with all supplies necessary to run program. Inform Camp Director of program supplies needed on a regular basis.
Oversee the Challenge Course program area and all equipment; ensure the challenge course program area is stocked with all supplies necessary to run program. Inform Camp Director of program supplies needed on a regular basis.
Maintaining in-depth knowledge about the specialized areas and its emergency action plan; ensure proper safety procedures are followed at all specialized areas and utilized first aid when necessary.
Maintain an understanding of NYS Department of Health standards and Girl Scouts Safety Activity Checkpoints safety requirements as pertaining to specialized areas.
Set up and clean up the specialized areas prior to and after daily usage, ensuring daily logs are maintained, and that equipment is in good working order; maintain organization of specialized areas equipment and shed.
Deliver robust and engaging programming as promised in the summer camp brochure.
Assist the Camp Director and Leadership team in the creation of all-camp and weekly unit activities as assigned.
Act as a leader and role model to other staff members through enthusiastic participation in all camp programming, utilizing excellent customer service skills, maintaining a professional demeanor and positive, upbeat disposition, maintaining the tenets of the Girl Scout Law, and communicating with other staff members in a way that is positive and encouraging.
Assist with weekly camp clean up, including sweeping, mopping, sanitizing, trash pick-up, etc.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Specialized Program Counselor assists the Camp Director and Leadership team in moderating the performance of Counselors. The Specialized Program Counselor does not supervise employees, but does supervise the campers.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualification Standards:
Be at least 21 years of age.
Believe in the Girl Scout mission.
Prior experience teaching or working with children a must.
Documented experience with archery, tomahawk throwing and/or riflery.
Documented experience with challenge courses (high and low)
Possess good character, integrity, patience, sense of humor, enthusiasm, and willing to be a part of the camp community.
Skills related to lesson planning and implementation, such as: time management, creativity, flexibility, and public speaking skills.
A GSNYPENN approved archery and tomahawk training, or willingness to obtain.
Current First Aid and CPR training, or willingness to obtain during pre-camp training.
“Stop The Bleed”, Wilderness First Aid or comparable training that includes tourniquet training.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects and details simultaneously.
Possess good character, integrity, patience, sense of humor, enthusiasm, a high level of flexibility, and willingness to be a part of the camp community.
Ability to work productively in a fast paced, stressful environment.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
Light mental and visual attention required for performing work where there is some variety but actions taken and decisions made are limited to few possibilities. Work requires some coordination with others.
Physical Exertion:
Prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching
Moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds)
Walking on uneven terrain and hills
Endurance to meet emergency needs
Ability (and willingness) to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours
Environmental Conditions:
