Overview This is a Labor Service position . In order to be eligible for the position you must also apply through Civil Service through the following link: Heavy Motor Equipment Repairman Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job): Under the general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of all Boston Fire Department motor vehicles and/or equipment, and may be required to service other commercial motor vehicles, and related work as required. Responsibilities Examines and locates mechanical defects of motor equipment including fire engines, ladder trucks, other special equipment, other commercial vehicles, as well as lighter vehicles including automobiles and other passenger vehicles. Performs preventative/scheduled maintenance and bumper to bumper analysis on all vehicles. Disassembles, repairs, grinds or replaces worn parts; fits new parts and adjusts engines oil, water and fuel pumps, carburetors and fuel injectors, governors starting motors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, breaks and steering gear; replaces electrical wiring, overhauls hydraulic lifts and hydraulic systems on various equipment, and steering assemblies on various motor vehicles; uses welding equipment to fabricate, rebuild and strengthen various parts and pieces of equipment; recovers, repairs and recycles air condition/coolant systems; maintains records of time and materials used on each job. Minimum Entrance Qualifications 1. Must have at least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid experience in maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel driven equipment, or alternative fuel driven equipment. Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, materials and practices used repairing, rebuilding, maintaining and adjusting all automotive equipment, other specialty equipment, and/or alternative fuel driven equipment. Trade school certification may serve as a substitute for such experience. 2. Considerable skill in the use of tools and equipment employed in all automotive repairs, rebuilding and adjustment, welding, repairing defects in automotive equipment; in the use of welding equipment to fabricate, rebuild, and strengthen various parts and pieces of equipment. 3. Working ability to diagnose defects in various automotive equipment; to repair all types of gasoline and/or diesel motor-driven equipment, and/or alternative fuel driven equipment. 4. Must be OEM or ASE certified. Professional experience may serve as a substitute for such certification upon hire; and then is required to be obtained during first six months of employment. (ASE certification in T4 Truck, Brakes and T5 Truck, Suspension and Steering.) 5. EVT certification Fire Apparatus Level I (FI - Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Apparatus, and F2 - Design & Performance Standard of Fire Apparatus) is preferred upon date of hire is required to be obtained within 12 months of date of hire. 6. Must possess a valid Massachusetts CDL Class B with an air brake endorsement. 1C Hoisting License preferred. Must obtain a Hoisting License within six (6) months of date of hire. 7. Ability to become certified in federally mandated refrigerant recycling and service procedures. 8. Ability to operate a computer is required. 9. Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job. INDIVIDUALS WISHING TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION MUST COMPLETE THE CIVIL SERVICE LABOR SERVICE REGISTRATION PROCESS FOR THE POSITION in addition to completing the City of Boston Career Center application.
