Description

This position is located at Camp Wesley Woods near Indianola, IA and would require living onsite at the camp. The site director leads and guides the overall, year-round operation of Wesley Woods United Methodist Camp and Retreat Center, located near Indianola, IA. This position is multi-faceted, providing leadership and staff supervision in the areas of: ministry, volunteer recruitment, local church relationships, hospitality, operational management, programming, staffing, development, marketing, and community engagement. The role requires flexibility as primary seasons/responsibilities require routine day, evening, and weekend work. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Lead daily, year-round operations through a ministry and hospitality lens that permeates throughout the staff and becomes a shared value when campers and guests experience Wesley Woods Camp and Retreat Center. Lead with a foundational understanding that Wesley Woods is an extension of the local church and cannot effectively exist without a focus on Christ and through relationship to the annual conference. Program oversite: Evaluate mission alignment and best practices to ensure the program ministry of Wesley Woods is contributing toward Christian community, spiritual formation, progressional experiences and skill development, and personal growth through self-understanding and confidence-building experiences. Essential dedication in the areas of equine program development, agricultural management/ stewardship, and shoulder season development. 10% Fiscal management: maintain a balanced budget, manage the annual budget process, develop and implement long-term fundraising strategies for the camp, develop and nurture donor relationships, and maintain a responsive posture to the directives of the annual conference or changing financial climates. 18% Risk management: maintain current understanding of best practices and ensure operational procedures are compliant with state and ACA requirements and conference insurance requirements. Focus shall include custody and control of minor and vulnerable adults, health services, programmatic safety, general supervision, allergies/food safety, incident reporting, and record retention. 17% Manage relationships with local churches, districts, and the annual conference. Develop a collaborative vision for marketing, to be carried out by the site team, that includes routine engagement with local churches, fluid website and social media engagement, area schools, stakeholders, and the local community. (This will require being present in local churches on weekdays/nights and Sundays). 20% In collaboration with the Facilities Manager, dedicate time to property development and maintenance to ensure the stewardship and ongoing development of the facility. Conduct annual assessment of the property and maintenance needs. Maintain a 5-year property plan for the camp and maintain a long-range maintenance plan for the site. 5% Collaborating with the HR department of the annual conference, implement human resource practices to recruit, train, supervise and retain year-round and seasonal employees. Ensure all staff serving seasonally or year-round are trained consistently with the IAUMC and ACA policies and best practices. Engage routinely with the hiring of seasonal staff and their oversite/management. 15% Engage with the Board of Camps and Executive Committee to communicate ministry and needs, and to strengthen the connection between the conference camping program, the annual conference, local churches, and the surrounding communities. 5% Lead the Site Committee for the growth and betterment of WW through visioning, volunteer recruitment/training/development, fund-raising and promotion, and stakeholder engagement. 5% Manage, and provide general staff oversite to complete and maintain compliance with the American Camp Association accreditation, best practices, and standards. 5% Perform other duties as assigned.
