Community Access Outreach Worker (CAOW)
Part-Time (20 hours/week) – Full Benefits
The Agency
The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charitable organization that is dedicated to reducing crime and making Calgary communities safer, by helping youth and adults make positive changes we can move them away from criminal behaviour. We do this by addressing the root causes of crime through housing, education, employment programs, and support, so that individuals have alternatives to breaking the law. The Program
The Government of Alberta’s Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program funds services that work in co njunction with CJHS, to help support clients with coordinating and accessing services so that they can live as independently as possible in their communities. PDD services offer a wide array of supports including, Home Living Support, Respite, Employment Support and Community Access. This program is for the implementation of the following: Services that promote an individual’s inclusion in community activities, and personal development, through activities such as arts, education, recreation, community association programs and participation in the volunteer sector.
The Position
Reporting to the Manager of Bedford House CRF, the Community Access Outreach Worker (CAOW) will provide one-on-one services to a client for 20 hours a week. These services will assist with their successful reintegration into the community. The client you will be working with may be incarcerated and awaiting release or living in community. The CAOW will work with the client to create a strength-based plan that includes activities such as pre-release planning, volunteering in the community, and any other activities that will assist in their successful community reintegration. The CAOW will be part of the client’s Case Work Team, and you will work collaboratively with them to implement their case work plan. You will help identify the client’s risk and protective factors so that we can provide the best access to, and success at, these activities. The CAOW is responsible for attending all activities with the client, and for all documentation. The CAOW must also be able to use individual discretion in making decisions, implement trauma informed care and natural supports with the client, and have knowledge and experience dealing with risk management, and high needs/high risk clients. You will also be responsible for reporting back to the Case Work Team on the client’s progress.
The successful candidate will have a post-secondary diploma or degree in the human services field or equivalent and a current criminal record check (CPIC) within the past three months. A valid class 5 driver’s license is required for this position.
CJHS will adhere with its obligations under the Alberta Human Rights Act. Brain Story Certification is considered an asset.
