Description
The department of Residential Life at Saint Michael’s College is seeking applications from current full-time graduate students for the position of Resident Director (RD) for the 2026 Fall semester with the possibility to extend into other academic years. The RD is a key member of the Residence Life Staff.
The RD is responsible for the total operation of a residential living area housing approximately 125-350 students. Responsibilities include developing community among residents, supervising undergraduate Resident Assistants, and articulating and enforcing policies. The RD also serves as a liaison to various campus offices including, but not limited to, the Student Life Office, Student Activities, the Bergeron Wellness Center, Center for Diversity, Empowerment, and Community, Office of Community Standards, The Center for Women and Gender, MOVE, Campus Ministry, and Public Safety.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities Include:
Create and maintain a harmonious living environment within the assigned living area:
~Provide an atmosphere that supports and encourages personal relationships.
~Provide a comfortable, accepting living environment for all students.
~Work as a facilitator to encourage interpersonal contact in an educational setting.
~Schedule and maintain prescribed hours in individual staff offices to allow for better utilization of time and access to students and staff.
Assist in the selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of the undergraduate staff members:
~Attend and participate in weekly Student Life staff meetings.
~Be responsible for the training and supervision of undergraduate Resident Assistants.
~Formally and informally evaluate staff relative to their performance on the job and commitment to the educational objectives of the Residence Life Program.
~Conduct weekly staff meetings and serve as a resource and advisor to Resident Assistants.
~Work to meet the individual needs of the staff so they are better able to accomplish their assigned duties.
~Support and work towards the established goals of the residential program by assisting in the selection of new staff members each spring.
~Participate in and/or implement staff workshops and training sessions for the Resident Director group and/or the entire Residential staff.
~Facilitate area discussions based on programs in order to enhance the topic and bring learning back to the residential areas.
~Be responsible for managing and motivating staff with regards to all aspects of programming responsibilities.
Interpret and enforce College and residence hall policies and procedures:
~Communicate the value of understanding both individual and community rights and responsibilities to all staff members and students.
~Serve as both a facilitator and a resource person when working with students involved in policy violations.
~Work to educate students about appropriate behavior and College policies and procedures.
~Recommend changes in policies and procedures to better meet the needs of all members of the College community.
~Participate in judicial responsibilities, including serving as a sanctioning officer for your area, and assisting with and participating at other levels of the judicial process.
~Duty responsibilities will include coverage for most of the 16 weeks of the semester, including breaks. Break coverage does not include a portion of the Winter Break or Summer. Extra compensation will be assigned for those times not included in the regular RD duty coverage.
~A Resident Director is on duty every night of the week, inclusive of daytime hours during weekends and holidays where offices are closed.
~The Resident Director on duty will be responsible for duty as well as checking in on, helping to implement, and attending campus programming.
~Several weekends are considered All Hands on Deck Weekends (AHOD) during which all RDs are expected to be around/sign up for shifts – such as Opening Weekend, Halloween Weekend, Last Weekend of Classes, PDAY Weekend, Closing Weekend, etc.
Administer all operations within the assigned living area
~Build and maintain a working relationship with the Facilities and Custodial staff in the area.
~Understand and implement the residence hall damage system and be able to articulate it to students.
~Maintain appropriate housing records and rosters and communicate any changes or discrepancies to Housing.
~Coordinate duty schedules and responsibilities for Resident Assistants.
~Work with members of the Public Safety staff to ensure a safe environment for living and learning within the assigned living area.
~Assess and evaluate student needs and recommend appropriate actions relative to the development of educational alternatives.
~Serve as resource to all special interest groups in the residential area (ie theme housing, etc).
Serve as “team member” of the Student Life Office
~Maintain contact with the Student Life Office each week, checking mailbox in Student Life, distributing materials from Student Life to staff or residents when needed, assisting with general operations and administration within the office
~Serve with specific tasks as needed to assist with ongoing projects, such as, but not limited to: Staff Selection; Fall Training; Ongoing InServices; Evaluation; Room Selection.
~Participate in student organizations or other campus-wide committees to support personal and professional interests.
~Assist with other functions of the Student Life Office as assigned.
Qualifications
Education/Coursework/Experience:
Must hold a Bachelor’s Degree. Must be enrolled in a Graduate program. Previous experience as a Resident Assistant, a student staff member, or in a leadership role within Student Affairs is strongly required. Prior experience in crisis management - Ability to manage emergency protocols (fire, flood, power, medical, safety threats) and document incidents. Prior experience managing operating budgets for an area, overseeing and reconciling program expenditures. Advanced Skills/Highly Specialized Tasks:
Manages a staff of undergraduate student leaders. Manages the living area for facility concerns for undergraduate students. Work closely with Public Safety, Fire & Rescue, Colchester Police, and other area organizations in emergency and crisis situations. High-level crisis response and crisis management, including as a first responder to self-harm/harm to others situations, other mental health circumstances, Title IX incidents, physical altercations. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Sharepoint or Google Forms. Comfort in conducting disciplinary meetings regularly. Crowd Management Training. Experience with/willingness to learn Maxient (Conduct platform) ) for tracking, documenting (disciplinary actions, wellness concerns, sanctions, etc), and communication. Experience with/willingness to learn Symplicity (Housing platform) for housing rosters, room assignments, etc. Plan and oversee programmatic and community development efforts in hall/area. Familiar/Comfortable with Restorative Justice practices. Title IX Training. Reasonable agreement
A Resident Director in the collegiate residence halls has an agreement with the College to be available to the residents of the campus, in the residence hall and to the Student Life program approximately 20 hours a week. This is broken up in the following way: approximately 17 hours being on call for the campus, meeting needs of residents, participating in and facilitating weekly staff meetings, coordinating programming efforts, carrying out judicial follow-up, and responding to residence hall needs and emergencies, 3 hours participating in operational and administrative needs of the RD position including but not limited to Student Life Office tasks, specific on-going projects/committees within Student Life, etc.
The Resident Director may use the remainder of his/ her time for attending classes, studying, going to events on campus, etc. as he or she chooses. The College considers as hours worked the 20 hours a week meeting the needs of their residents and responding to emergency situations.
Compensation: Monetary compensation of $16,540 (returning RD) or $14,350 (new hire RD) for full year (mid-August to mid-May, with optional summer opportunities) Paid a biweekly stipend via payroll
Partial meals – Valued at $1,300 . This includes 50 meals from the dining hall and $200 dollars will be placed on your Knight Card per semester.
Total monetary compensation and meals: $15,650-$17,840. Compensation pro-rated accordingly based on actual start date/term.
~Housing – valued at approximately $1000 per month ($12,000 per year). Housing will be provided from mid-August to mid-May, with optional summer opportunities. However, all RD's should expect to vacate their current apartments by June 1st to allow for the cleaning and maintenance of the apartments
~Utilities – wifi, computer, heat, water, parking, and electricity valued at approximately $150 per month ($1,800 per year)
~Other benefits – access to library, on campus gym, discounted off campus gym membership, MOVE service trips, speakers, book clubs, and programs (Immeasurable in value)
~Tuition Waiver Benefit for SMC Graduate classes – valued at $690 per credit hour (typically 18 credits – 6 classes- $12,420 per year). Note: tuition benefits that exceed the IRS limit (Currently $5,250) in the calendar year are considered taxable).
~Summer employment available
~Summer Duty typically $2700 and up based on duties. Summer Duty compensation is based on the scope and nature of assigned duties. Compensation levels are reviewed and evaluated on a yearly basis to ensure alignment with responsibilities and institutional needs.
Total Yearly Compensation and Benefits – Approximately $ 44,570 - $46,760.
