Open to: Division-Wide Work Week:   NL (35-hour) Work Week Salary: (R28) $88,529.64- $130,338.54 Opening Date: 6/2/2026 Closing Date:  6/16/2026 Existing Vacancies: 1 Program/Location Department of Environmental Protection Air, Energy and Materials Sustainability Air Quality and Radiation Protection X-Ray Compliance 25 Arctic Parkway Ewing, NJ 08638 Scope of Eligibility Open to permanent employees in a competitive title that work for the Division of Air Quality and Radiation Protection and meet the requirements below. Description Under general supervision of a higher level supervisor in the Department of Environmental Protection, supervises, organizes and coordinates radiological surveys and inspections; organizes and supervises laboratory procedures to evaluate environmental samples for radioactive concentration; organizes and supervises environmental sampling and quality assurance associated with radioactively contaminated site decommissioning and environmental sampling associated with radiological assessment of accidents involving radioactive materials and nuclear electric generating stations; supervises staff and work activities; prepares and signs official performance evaluations for subordinate staff; does other related duties. Specific to the Position Responsible for inspection of over 27,000 medical and industrial x-ray machines registered throughout the state to ensure compliance with radiation protection regulations (NJAC 7:28).  This includes utilizing sophisticated measuring devices to evaluate the energy level and dose rate outputs of x-ray equipment to ensure radiation dose to patients is within acceptable ranges and measuring x-ray levels in the environs of the machines to ensure that they are within acceptable public dose limits. This position supervises the machine source section of the Bureau of X-ray Compliance which includes managing annual inspection goals, coordinating inspection equipment, overseeing and support inspections of dental x‑ray facilities and quality‑assurance (QA) x‑ray installations, ensuring adherence to regulatory protocols and high technical accuracy. This position also participates in nuclear emergency response drills associated with the three nuclear power plants in New Jersey. Requirements EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Radiologic Technology, Radiation Science or Environmental Sciences, which includes sixteen (16) semester credit hours in any combination of the following lab-based courses: physics, chemistry, biology or medical imaging. EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years of technical experience in the field of radiological health. NOTE: A Master's degree in one of the above fields may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience. NOTE: A Doctorate in one of the above fields may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. NOTE: All U.S. degrees and transcripts must be from an accredited college or university. All foreign degrees and transcripts must be evaluated for accreditation by a recognized evaluation service by the closing date of this posting. Failure to provide documentation may result in ineligibility.
