Performs journey level skills or crafts, or building trades such as HVAC, electrical, painting, carpentry, plumbing, cement, masonry, dry wall, machinist, roofing, welding, doors/hardware or other recognized trade and maintenance areas. Must be able to operate, maintain, and repair mechanical equipment and vehicles/carts. This is a skilled position for building maintenance and operation work.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>At the zoo we look for employees who are passionate about conservation, who approach their daily work with a can-do attitude, who are resourceful, who communicate respectfully with everyone, and are ready to work hard supporting the zoo&rsquo;s mission of creating champions for wildlife by making connections between people and animals to inspire action.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>REPORTING RELATIONSHIP</strong></p><p>Reports directly to the Maintenance/Facilities Manager.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</strong></p><ol><li>Performs journey level skills building crafts and trades, with full knowledge of building maintenance techniques, methods, practices, standards, procedures, safety precautions, and materials required for the assigned tasks.</li><li>Inspects and services equipment such as lighting, hot waters systems, chillers, compressors, timers, pumps, air conditioners, swamp coolers, animal drinkers, hotwire, fans, motors, fencing/gates, operators and vehicles/carts.</li><li>Places equipment in operation, checks and records various gauges and instruments to maintain the proper level of water, oil and refrigerants, and to control system output. Operates valves and thermostats, direct digital controls to regulate services to designated areas.</li><li>Repairs and ensures the proper operation of such systems as pneumatic, electric, hydraulic, and overhead doors, diagnosing problems, repairing equipment, and when necessary, rebuilding inoperative parts and equipment, using hand and power tools, brazing/mig and arc welding.</li><li>Reads and interprets performance charts, control panels and blueprints which reflect the operation and layout of each piece of equipment in a system. &nbsp;Records all necessary information on equipment operation.</li><li>Safely operates and is experienced in electronic testing tools, hand, and power tools, lifts, forklifts, and all other tools and equipment required to perform maintenance tasks and assignments.</li><li>Operates computer systems and facilities management computer applications for work order assignments including mobile work order systems to receive, generate work order assignments, and record asset changes, equipment specification information.&nbsp;</li><li>Ensures the work area conforms with the security and safety measures in effect and practices good housekeeping.</li><li>Lubricates machinery and equipment. &nbsp;Performs other preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment and component parts such as fan belts, pump seals, filters, bearings, etc.</li><li>Perform seasonal snow plow and ice removal operations and works with team members to ensure safe removal of snow and ice.</li><li>Performs other duties as required and responds to emergency situations.</li><li>This position will be part of the On-Call rotation shared with the maintenance staff.</li><li>Commitment to the zoo&rsquo;s mission and conservation efforts.</li><li>Ability to work over-time as needed.&nbsp;</li><li>Maintains strict confidentiality.&nbsp;</li></ol><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES NEEDED</strong></p><ul><li>Four years&rsquo; experience in a similar position maintaining Zoo&rsquo;s, or other commercial buildings and systems.</li><li>Ability to read and interpret blueprints, circuit diagrams, and various types of operations and maintenance manuals.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;</li><li>Ability to relate well with the public, supervisors and fellow employees.</li><li>Able to be creative and solve many different animal containment and building issues.</li><li>Demonstrate skills in estimating costs, fabricating, building, controlling and troubleshooting building systems.</li><li>Proficient in working with computer applications including MS word, excel, and outlook.</li><li>&nbsp; &nbsp;Proficient in Facilities Management application for work order assignments, including mobile work order systems to receive, generate work order assignments, and record asset changes, equipment specification information.&nbsp;</li><li>&nbsp; &nbsp;Able to troubleshoot pumps, HVAC, controls, electrical, plumbing and other building Systems efficiently providing both short- and long-term solutions to system problems.&nbsp;</li><li>&nbsp; &nbsp;Must have a positive attitude and be a team player.</li><li>&nbsp; &nbsp;Possession of a valid Utah driver license is required.</li></ul><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Must possess excellent communications skills:&nbsp;</p><ul><li>Interpersonal conflict resolution method.&nbsp;</li><li>Effectively promote organization and services offered.&nbsp;</li><li>Interpersonal communication.&nbsp;</li><li>Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.&nbsp;</li></ul><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Must have the ability to:&nbsp;</p><ul><li>Follow written and verbal instructions.&nbsp;</li><li>Apply critical thinking techniques.&nbsp;</li><li>Analyze and solve problems.&nbsp;</li><li>Prioritize work.&nbsp;</li><li>Perform within deadlines.&nbsp;</li><li>Ability to stay focused despite interruptions.&nbsp;</li><li>Deal with stress caused by deadlines.&nbsp;</li><li>Work well in a team environment as well as independently.&nbsp;</li><li>Memory for details.</li></ul><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>OTHER REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION&nbsp;</strong></p><ul type=\"disc\"><li>Utah&rsquo;s Hogle Zoo is a drug-free workplace. All employees are subject to random drug testing.&nbsp;</li><li>Provide a negative TB test prior to hire date and maintain TB testing through course of employment</li><li>A valid driver&rsquo;s license is required.</li></ul><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WORK ENVIRONMENT</strong></p><p>Moderately heavy physical activity. Required push, pull or lift heavy weights up to 100 pounds from 10%-15% of the work time. Difficult working positions. May have to stand, walk or sit in uncomfortable position for extend periods and squat or crawl into small spaces under and near operation equipment to check and complete minor repairs. May perform work in ceilings, on tops of ladders, bucket lifts, scissor lifts and roof in heights exceeding 100 feet. High exposure to disagreeable elements such as dust, fumes, noise, dampness, cold heat, chemicals or grease. Required to push, pull or lift -heavy weights. Must be able to perform heavy labor, including lifting up to 75 pounds.
