Description
Responsible for managing the daily referral and donor case activity, to include medical evaluation, family approach, organ allocation, and provide clinical expertise. This role is critical to providing guidance and development to frontline team members and a crucial component to saving more lives through organ donation. Serves as a role model for MTN Behavioral Competencies.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
CLINICAL
Serves as clinical resource to Organ Procurement staff during donor referral assessment and case management, providing onsite or phone assistance as needed.
Coaches frontline team members by providing consistent, evidenced based critical thinking and decision support while considering appropriate resource management decisions. Provides thorough, in-depth guidance utilizing highly developed clinical expertise and advanced knowledge of the organ donation process.
Interprets hospital policies for determination of neurological death and guides staff to ensure potential donor patients are declared appropriately (where applicable). Collaborates with Medical Director(s) and Intensivist on Call in evaluating donor suitability and setting appropriate donor case plans.
Provides real-time direction and guidance to staff for donor identification, evaluation, authorization, clinical management, organ allocation, and surgical recovery directed towards maximizing every organ donation opportunity.
Reviews documentation in TrueNorth and UNET, prior to allocation.
Reviews match runs with organ procurement transplant coordinator and renal placement coordinator and guides allocation.
Becomes proficient in arterial line insertion, echocardiography, and bronchoscopy; perform procedures on site as needed.
Problem solves with onsite organ team members and provides clinical and logistical expertise in all areas of the donation process. Communicates deviations from standard behavior and/or practices to appropriate manager for follow-up.
Maintains an awareness of all active referrals and pending activity to ensure optimal use of available resources.
Collaborates with organ perfusion device suppliers to gather performance data, as well as maintaining knowledge of industry standards, up and coming technology, and device availability.
Ensures consistent application and compliance with regulatory standards/requirements as well as organizational policies and procedures.
Offers on-site mentoring, education, guidance, and support of clinical staff. Works closely with clinical leadership, OP Clinical Educators and Education Department to identify training needs and employee development. Serves as subject matter expert in clinical processes and procedures.
ADMINISTRATIVE
Participates in all aspects of the donation process in periods of high activity, short staffing or as otherwise needed.
Participates in preparation of AOC and Case Review Meetings.
Participates in performance improvement initiatives, identifying trends and supporting formal staff education needs including involvement in regular case activity review process. Assists with data collection, analysis, and shares best-practices for presentation and education during Case Review Meetings.
Participates in the review and analysis of Donor Management Goals and assists in identifying needs for continuing education
Attends and actively participates in OP departmental meetings and required organizational meetings, including the annual Skills Day training.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
RN licensure required. Advanced degree or certification preferred.
CPTC Certification required.
5+ years’ experience as an OPC or combination of experience and education providing equivalent knowledge required.
Participates in up to 50% 24-hour AOC call schedule, averaging 10-12 shifts per month. Required to work for extended periods of time with few breaks.
Must maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with MTN motor vehicle policy. Must have reliable personal automobile transportation to be used with company reimbursement using IRS guidelines. Must be able to travel within the service area by ground or air.
Excellent organization and time management skills; ability to function independently and collaboratively; demonstrated problem-solving and creative thinking skills and well-developed personal stress management skills.
Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to speak and communicate clearly and accurately to convey information to MTN stakeholders in person or by phone; written documentation of relevant information in a professional manner.
Ability to lift 50 pounds and transfer short distances.
Possess the ability to operate telephones, computers, and surgical equipment.
OSHA Category I – Exposed regularly to bloodborne pathogens while performing assigned job duties. Bloodborne pathogens protection is required.
Home internet and wireless phone access may be required.
