The Audience Deputy, Coverage, will develop and execute strategies for growing and engaging audiences for our journalism. This individual will report to the Newsroom Audience Director and help scale audience insights and reporting across the newsroom. In this role, you will lead our cohort of audience editors who are embedded directly on desks and propagate best practices broadly across the newsroom. In addition to overseeing our desk audience editor team, you will support the newsroom audience director in advising the masthead on all audience concerns, including regular and real time recommendations on coverage approaches, optimizing distribution strategies and identifying longer-term coverage opportunities. This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. Responsibilities Manage the team of embedded audience editors, standardize expectations and propagate best practices; foster career growth and skill development Identify trending topics and competitive trends, along with coverage and format opportunities that will drive growth and competitive performance Interpret data and audience signals to strategically shape how we present stories both on and off our platforms Scale audience insights and thinking across the newsroom, ensuring embedded desk editors are effective, collaborative and efficient in planning and analysis Ensure daily, weekly and monthly reporting for the masthead and desk heads is actionable, accurate, and efficient, advocating for the biggest real-time opportunities and offering rigorous analysis of performance Act as the primary audience lead for Investigations and major, multi-desk projects from pre- to post-publication, including creating and circulating a promotional playbook that include levers on and off-platform Seed editorial experimentation and testing by providing coverage leaders with approaches and structure, organizing experiments into a transparent roadmap, monitoring their progress and regularly communicating results to leadership, including but not limited to monthly masthead and executive presentations Liaise with search, social, community, home, notifications, and newsletter teams on breaking news and enterprise Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. This role reports to the Newsroom Audience Director Basic Qualifications 10+ years of progressive experience in digital journalism, with a demonstrated track record growing audience and implementing audience strategy Experience working in a fast-paced news environment Demonstrated success in creating and implementing workflow and communication processes for big, cross-functional teams Proven experience in managing and mentoring a team of editors or content professionals Facility with audience data and making data-informed strategic decisions In-depth knowledge of the evolving search and AI landscape, with the ability to spot trends and identify misinformation Exceptional writing and editing skills, with knowledge of Times style or the ability to absorb and apply it quickly Preferred Qualifications: Solid understanding of all mainstream and emerging social channels, with a willingness to continuously learn about new platforms A dedication to The Times and its journalistic mission REQ-019995 The annual base pay range for this role is between: $180,000 — $210,000 USD For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
