Description Mechanic Foreman JOB TITLE: Sanitation Mechanic Foreman CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt DEPARTMENT: Public Works/Transfer Station SUPERVISOR: Fleet Maintenance Manager SALARY: $65,936 to $79,124 Annually GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION To lead, oversee, and participate in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for mechanical repairs to a variety of gasoline and diesel automotive and construction equipment; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Lead, plan, train, and review the work of staff responsible for mechanical repairs to a variety of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment owned by the city. Plan, direct, and participate in the full range of complex mechanical maintenance and repair activities. Supervise the use of and operate a variety of equipment in a safe and effective manner. Train assigned employees in their areas of work in mechanical work methods, techniques, and in the setup and use of equipment. Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specification. Ensure the adherence to safe work practices and procedures. Lead and participate in the repair of mechanical defects in all mechanical equipment involving a variety of vehicles owned by the city. Analyze failures; determine problems and causes; recommend solutions. Perform general overhauling, engine rebuilding, and tune-ups involving gasoline and diesel-powered engines. Independently perform the most difficult and complex work activities in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel automotive, construction equipment, and firefighting equipment. Replace worn parts; adjust and repair brakes and steering systems, transmissions, cooling systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and drive-train mechanisms; diagnose electrical components. Diagnose problems and repair automotive, construction, electrical, hydraulic, air-conditioning, and other mechanical equipment. Perform inspection and repairs to Sanitation fuel site and have required storage tank program A license. SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Assist in the general maintenance and cleaning of the shop area. Be available to be contacted by phone in case of an emergency. Lead, organize, and review the work of staff in the area or work assigned. Change and repair tires; perform safety inspections on vehicles; report safety and repair work activities. Inspect and diagnose mechanical defects and problems with all City owned vehicles and equipment. Fuel, grease, and lubricate all City owned vehicles and equipment and ensure proper fluid levels. Perform arc and gas welding and fabrication services; perform the maintenance of small equipment. Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required. Inventory control of parts and supplies at location assigned. Perform task list for scheduled Preventive Maintenance and notify departments of overdue equipment in a timely manner. Perform major and minor tune-ups, required maintenance of automotive equipment including lubrication and general servicing. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Theory of operation of automatic and manual transmission. General vehicle repair. Ignition, brakes, fuel, and cooling systems. Steering mechanisms and front-end assemblies. Tire repair and safety. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Be available to be contacted by phone in case of an emergency. Lead, organize, and review the work of staff in work assigned. Independently perform the most difficult and complex work activities in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel automotive, construction equipment, and firefighting equipment. Interpret, explain, and enforce Department policies and procedures. Operate a variety of construction equipment in a safe and effective manner. Operate a variety of automotive repair equipment in a safe and effective manner. Diagnose problems and repair automotive, construction, electrical, hydraulic, air-conditioning, and other mechanical equipment. Perform major and minor tune-ups. Perform required maintenance of automotive equipment including lubrication and general servicing. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB Required: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible automotive and equipment mechanical experience plus three years of experience in supervisory responsibility. CDL license within six (6) months of hire (may be extended based on LCCC program vacancy) Preferred : Four (4) years of increasingly responsible automotive and equipment mechanical experience plus three years of experience in supervisory responsibility. Specialized training in the full mechanical repair of vehicles, construction equipment, and small equipment, including some experience in diesel and electrical repair. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain the physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 50 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities. Working Environment : Shop environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases; work in confined spaces. Outside environment, working on equipment that breaks down in field. Inclement weather conditions. Work irregular hours including assigned overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed. May be required to be on-call evenings, weekends and carry on-call phone. \\r\\n\\tSupervise the use of and operate a variety of equipment in a safe and effective manner.\\r\\n\\tTrain assigned employees in their areas of work in mechanical work methods, techniques, and in the setup and use of equipment. \\r\\n\\tVerify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specification.\\r\\n\\tEnsure the adherence to safe work practices and procedures.\\r\\n\\tLead and participate in the repair of mechanical defects in all mechanical equipment involving a variety of vehicles owned by the city.\\r\\n\\tAnalyze failures; determine problems and causes; recommend solutions.\\r\\n\\tPerform general overhauling, engine rebuilding, and tune-ups involving gasoline and diesel-powered engines. \\r\\n\\tIndependently perform the most difficult and complex work activities in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel automotive, construction equipment, and firefighting equipment.\\r\\n\\tReplace worn parts;
