The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Department of Genetics, Genomics and Informatics is recruiting a full-time non-tenure track faculty position as Assistant Professor available immediately in the area of high performance computational pangenomics and genetics applied to humans, model organisms, and somatic mutations.
Responsibilities
The selected candidate will be responsible for supervising students, fellows, programmers, and technicians, writing scientific papers, producing open source software systems, presenting data at scientific meetings and applying for grants. The candidate will report to the department chair.
May supervise lab personnel and research technicians.
Qualifications
A PhD degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or related field, with experience in algorithm development and software engineering for (pan)genomics.
Departmental Preferences:
At least 5 years of experience in high performance
computing and open-source software development in biomedical research.
State-of-the-art experience in several of the following areas: advanced statistical genomics and in code optimization for high-performance computing; full stack web-services for genomics and genetics; programming languages; database system design and implementation for HPC; sequence alignment and pangenomics.
Proven track record of research with one or more active grants from a US federal agency as investigator.
Strong programming skills in C++ and Python, fluency in Linux command-line use. Experience in Rust or other functional programming languages will be considered an advantage.
Exposure to software deployment using Nix, Guix, Conda
Affinity with genetics and genomics.
Strong communication skills, connecting technology to biology and developers to end users.
Curiosity, a critical research attitude, and an interdisciplinary mindset.
