Position Title: Dean of Humanities
Department: Humanities
Reports To: Senior Vice President of Instruction
Position Summary
The Dean of Humanities provides strategic leadership, administrative oversight, and academic direction for the Humanities Division. This position is responsible for fostering academic excellence, supporting faculty and staff, advancing student success, and ensuring the effective operation of all humanities programs and services. The Dean oversees curriculum development, budgeting, personnel, assessment, accreditation, and community engagement while promoting innovation and collaboration across the institution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide visionary leadership for the Humanities Division, including academic programs, faculty, staff, and related initiatives.
Supervise, support, and evaluate division faculty, department chairs, and staff in accordance with institutional policies and procedures.
Lead strategic planning, goal setting, and continuous improvement efforts for the division.
Oversee curriculum development, revision, and assessment to ensure academic quality, rigor, and relevance.
Ensure compliance with accreditation standards, state and federal regulations, and institutional policies.
Develop, manage, and monitor the division budget, including resource allocation and fiscal stewardship.
Promote student success through innovative programming, retention initiatives, and academic support services.
Collaborate with faculty to assess student learning outcomes and implement improvement strategies.
Support faculty recruitment, hiring, onboarding, professional development, and retention.
Foster a culture of academic excellence, innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity.
Coordinate scheduling, staffing, and course offerings to meet student and institutional needs.
Represent the Humanities Division on institutional committees, councils, and task forces.
Develop and maintain partnerships with schools, community organizations, business leaders, and transfer institutions.
Support grant development, fundraising, and external partnership opportunities.
Facilitate program review and accreditation processes.
Promote interdisciplinary collaboration and integration across academic divisions.
Address student concerns, academic issues, and faculty matters in a timely and effective manner.
Encourage the use of instructional technology and innovative teaching practices.
Fulfill Caring Campus responsibilities by cultivating a welcoming, student-centered environment, building meaningful connections, responding with empathy, and proactively supporting student success through communication, collaboration, and care
Perform other duties as assigned.

The Dean of Humanities may oversee programs and disciplines including, but not limited to:
English and Literature
Communication and Speech
Foreign Languages
History
Philosophy
Fine Arts (Art, Music, Theatre)
Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies
Developmental Education within assigned disciplines
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in a humanities discipline from an accredited institution (doctorate preferred).
Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in higher education.
Minimum of three (3) years of leadership or administrative experience in an academic setting.
Demonstrated experience in faculty supervision, budget management, and academic program administration.
Strong understanding of curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation processes.
Commitment to student success, shared governance, and academic excellence.
Preferred Qualifications
Earned doctorate in a humanities discipline, higher education administration, or related field.
Experience as a department chair, dean, or other academic administrator.
Community college experience.
Experience with strategic planning, enrollment management, and grant development.
Familiarity with state higher education regulations and reporting requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of higher education administration, academic policies, and humanities disciplines.
Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to build collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders.
Skill in budget planning, fiscal management, and resource allocation.
Ability to analyze data, assess program effectiveness, and implement strategic improvements.
Proficiency in educational technology, student information systems, and productivity software.
Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
Physical Requirements
Ability to perform essential administrative functions in an office environment.
Ability to travel between campus locations and attend off-campus meetings and events.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
ANNUAL SALARY/BENEFITS: Highly competitive and commensurate with experience and credentials. Group health and life insurance (60 day waiting period for health) and retirement benefits (TRS or ORP). Optional benefits include vision, disability and dental insurance.
