An initiative of the Burnaby Primary Care Network, the MOSAIC Community Clinic is a priority population patient medical home providing longitudinal primary care in the Burnaby Edmonds area. The clinic supports five priority populations: newcomers, First Nations, Metis and Inuit, new parents and babies, homeless or under-housed individuals, as well as individuals with complex mental health. The clinic is multi-disciplinary with family physicians, nurse practitioners, administrative staff, and allied health practitioners.

We are looking for an experienced and empathetic Lactation Consultant who in collaboration with the Clinic team, will provide exceptional care and service to the community! Not sure if you meet 100% of the qualifications? We encourage you to apply anyway!
POSITION FUNCTION :
Reporting to the Clinic Director, the Lactation Consultant , is responsible for providing evidence-based, comprehensive breastfeeding education, counseling, and support services for mothers, babies, and families. This position is responsible for providing guidance and support to healthcare providers, new parents, and families in promoting breastfeeding and implementing breastfeeding-friendly practices. The Lactation Consultant operates in accordance with the guidelines and full scope of practice as outlined by the International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) Commission, utilizing a team-based care model the Lactation Consultants work closely with Family Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, and other allied health professionals to provide patient care. In accordance with the mission, vision, values, and strategic directions of MOSAIC, client/patient safety is a priority, and a responsibility shared by everyone within the organization, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintain and handle confidential information appropriately, maintaining a working knowledge of best practices with applicable Acts.
Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
Conducts assessments, identifying and consulting on basic and complex breastfeeding problems.
Provides individual and group lactation support services, including lactation education, in-clinic lactation visits, and follow-up phone and email support
Provides breastfeeding education and counseling to healthcare providers, families, and the community
Identifies and refers clients to appropriate community resources
Develops and teaches breastfeeding classes and workshops
Develops and maintains breastfeeding practices
Provides a culturally safe and trauma-informed perspective in consultation with health care team members to enable patients to access the services they need.
Uses evidence-based resources, reference guides, in-services and workshops, to keep knowledge, procedures, and certification up to date.
Participates in continuous quality improvement and program evaluation activities, education sessions, team conferences, meetings and committees.
QUALIFICATIONS :
International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) is required
BC Lactation Consultant Association membership is an asset
Minimum of two years of recent related experience as a lactation consultant working with families representing a range of breastfeeding ages or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience;
Experience working with populations experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges, or with histories of trauma, and/or have structural barriers to health;
Knowledge of community and public health resources;
Adheres to trauma and violence-informed practice including cultural sensitivity and humility
Able to use and exercise sound judgment
English communication skills, other languages an asset;
Able to recognize patient and community needs and develop appropriate resources to meet social and emotional needs
Interpersonal skills
Problem-solving skills
Able to manage stress and work under pressure
Able to work independently and with a team
Physical ability to perform the duties of the position; sitting, standing, bending, and ability to lift 10 kg.
Tactful, discrete, diplomatic, patient, flexible
Knowledge and experience using MS Office suite, standard office equipment, and EMR software
Current satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
HOURS:
This is a part-time position until January 31, 2028, to cover staff on mat leave.
The successful candidate is expected to work 3 days per week (Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 7.5hrs/day)
The successful candidate must be able to commute to the Edmonds Clinic location.
COMPENSATION: $40.20 - $45.81 per hour
BENEFITS: Employees with an employment contract, offering at least 17.5 hours of work per week for at least one (1) year, are eligible for extended health, dental, life insurance, dependents life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, and long-term disability benefits upon their contract start date. Enrollment in the Employee and Family Assistance Program and optional enrollment in RRSP will take effect on the first day of the month that follows the start date. Benefit premiums are paid by employee/MOSAIC based on a cost-sharing formula of 20/80% of the cost.
