Description

Dillard University, classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a balanced arts and sciences/professions institution, invites applications and nominations for the position of Licensed Professional Counselor. The University is located in the culturally-rich and diverse city of New Orleans, Louisiana. Position Summary: The Licensed Professional Counselor for Student Support Services: Regular is responsible for assisting in identifying a pool of students eligible to participate in program services. Recommend students for personal counseling in individual and/or group settings. Present workshops/seminars on personal development issues, academic success strategies graduate school information, career information, and other relevant topics. Provide feedback to laboratory instructors and faculty to aid them in meeting the student's academic and personal needs. Refer students to proper agencies when their problems extend beyond the realm of Student Support Services. Assist in data collection and preparation of performance reports for the U.S. Department of Education. Maintain ongoing reports of all counseling activities. Assist in preparation of all grant applications. Please note: This is a Temporary full-time position scheduled for forty (40) hours per week. Upon acceptance of this position, you are agreeing to adhere to the Mission and Values of Dillard University and the responsibilities set forth. • Develops personalize action plans and/or intervention plans based on their circumstances during the initial meeting with the student. • Maintain direct contact with assigned student including but not limited to monitoring academic progress; discussing and supporting the student as she/he resolves issues that occur in the classroom environment; informing and appraising students of available resources. • Assist students experiencing difficulty academically or in other areas, helping them to develop and implement student action (success) plans. • Counsel students facing academic challenges, as well as academic and/or personal obstacles. • Maintains current and accurate files on students to include individual counseling sessions, reason for each session, an assessment and a plan of action with appropriate follow-up. • Develops a system to communicate with other staff, departments and community resources to coordinate the delivery of services needed for the students. • Interact effectively with program administrative staff (i.e., Program Director, Assistant Vice President, and Vice President) and Program Coordinators. • Identifies and addresses personal issues that are barriers to successful adjustment and participation in the program. • Makes referrals to proper agencies for students who need more intensive services. • Develops methods and strategies to keep students motivated to achieve their goals. • Track progress toward student’s academic and personal goals. • Assures necessary confidentiality of student information and safeguard their right to privacy. • Keeps abreast of all correspondence and changes related to counseling in an effort to provide current information and quality services to students. • Present workshops/seminars on personal development issues, graduate school information, career information, and other relevant topics. • Develops and conducts sessions/workshops on parenting and life skills for Keys to Success: Single Parent college students. • Facilitates routine group and individual meetings and conferences with single parent college students. • Provides support as personal issues arise, referring parents, as needed, to the appropriate services within and outside of Dillard University (e.g., academic support services, counseling, child care services, community programs, etc.). • Collect, evaluate and record all information pertaining to student cases that come in through the program, as well as referrals from other University departments. • Communicate and collaborate with other University departments to expedite resolution of problems. • Assist in data collection and preparation of performance reports for the U.S. Department of Education and Dillard University. • Maintain ongoing reports of all counseling activities. • Assist in preparation of all grant applications. • Performs other related duties designed to support the success of Student Support Services and the Counseling Center. • Extended hours required on an as needed basis, including evening, early morning and weekend assignments, as needed. • Performs related duties as assigned. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Required Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities • A minimum of a Master’s degree is required, preferably in Counselor Education, Guidance and Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling or related area. • Broad knowledge of counseling strategies. • Three years of counseling related experience. • Experience with diagnostic and assessment tools preferred. • Grant writing skills. • The successful candidate will have experience in working with students from a disadvantaged background. Additional qualifications would include prior experience working with a TRIO program (s), and having comprehensive knowledge of academic needs of low-income, first- generation, and/or disabled students. Physical Demands The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
