Description
Responsible for performing a variety of skilled work in the maintenance and repair of the City’s water and wastewater generators, transferring switch gear, and associated equipment. An employee in this class performs a variety of skilled and technical tasks in the inspection, repair, preventive, and corrective maintenance on internal combustion (IC) engines, diesel generators, and other internal combustion gaseous engines; tests, replaces or adjusts engine components such as valves, pistons, bearings, emissions systems, and other related systems; and interprets schematic wiring and modifies diesel control circuits. Work is performed under general supervision or with technical guidance may perform more difficult assignments as assigned by Facility Maintenance Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Ensures that the City's infrastructure remains intact in the event of power failure due to climatic or domestic conditions.
Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on automatic transfer switches (ATS) and annunciator panels.
Assists and participates in routine inspections of IC engines, generators, and associated equipment.
Performs load testing on units to identify possible problems and prevent wet stacking.
Makes electrical and mechanical wiring modifications to LP, natural gas, diesel control circuits.
Programs and calibrates electrical control boards and other components.
Rebuilds and repairs gas compressors (turbochargers) used for forced induction of IC engines, head gaskets, seals, water pumps, catalytic converters, torque heads, belts and hoses.
Conducts automatic and manual transfer tests of simulated power outages to ensure generators are functioning properly.
Tests batteries, fuel coolant, and oil; and ships oil samples for analysis.
Troubleshoots and repairs SCADA and various pump motors using technical drawings, flow charts, and line diagrams.
Performs lock out/ tag out procedures on various electrical equipment.
Transport and dispose of waste materials.
Obtains materials, supplies, tools and equipment using established purchasing procedures.
Keeps records of work activities in Cityworks.
Coordinates with various utility companies for installation, restoration, and maintenance of services associated with the City’s water and sewer facilities.
Assists in other divisions as needed.
Participates in the City's safety program and adheres to safety procedures and policies.
Performs other related job duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE GENERATOR MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN CAREER LADDER
Qualifications for a Generator Maintenance Technician I – Grade 13 - $47,040 - $59,316
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency; and two (2) years of experience working in the power production field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with repair and maintenance of internal combustion engines, standby power generators, automatic transfer switches and associated equipment preferred.
Special Qualifications:
Possession of a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
Factory training/certifications preferred.
Must be considered a City approved “Qualified Electrical Professional” or ability to obtain in 1 yr.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency and six (6) or more years of electrical and mechanical with maintenance of standby power generation units and associated automatic transfer switches.

Possession of a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
Factory training/certifications required for Cummins, Onan, Kohler or Generac. Cummins and Onan preferred.
Five-year experience with electrical devises and controls as they pertain to generators and ATS’s
NC Licensed Electrician or Associates Degree or equivalent in electrical/power generation.
One year experience as and Generator Maintenance Technician II. Other related experience in equivalent position(s) will be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in maintenance and repair of commercial generators and switchgear.

Physical Demands
Work in this classification is defined as heavy work requiring the physical exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, working, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms’ length, operation of machines and motor vehicles, determining accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing surroundings.
Work Environment
Work is primarily performed in both inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat, noise from motorized maintenance equipment, vibrations, atmospheric conditions, oils, greases, fumes, dirt, sharps from metal and glass, and biting or stinging insects and possibly reptiles. Employees must wear hearing/visual protection while performing most field work and may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens requiring specialized personal protective equipment. Employee may frequently work in close quarters, crawl space, shafts, manholes, small, enclosed rooms and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.

Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.</li>\n <li>Factory training/certifications required for Cummins, Onan, Kohler or Generac. Cummins and Onan preferred.</li>\n <li>Five-year experience with electrical devises and <u>controls</u> as they pertain to generators and ATS’s</li>\n <li>NC Licensed Electrician or Associates Degree or equivalent in electrical/power generation.</li>\n <li>One year experience as and Generator Maintenance Technician II. Other related experience in equivalent position(s) will be considered.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><strong><u>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: </u></strong></p>\n<ul>\n <li>Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in maintenance and repair of commercial generators and switchgear.</li>\n <li>Knowledge of operation and troubleshooting generators and transfer switches.</li>\n <li>Knowledge of electrical control maintenance and repair techniques. </li>\n <li>Knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned areas of work.</li>\n <li>Knowledge of city purchasing procedures.</li>\n <li>Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.</li>\n <li>Ability to use varied equipment required in performance of duties.</li>\n <li>Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the general public.</li>\n <li>Ability to keep accurate records of materials used.</li>\n <li>Ability to set appropriate priorities and work productively without close supervision.</li>\n <li>Ability to identify and report maintenance needs or safety issues to the supervisor.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><strong><u>Physical Demands</u></strong></p>\n<p>Work in this classification is defined as heavy work requiring the physical exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, working, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms’ length, operation of machines and motor vehicles, determining accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing surroundings.</p>\n<p><strong><u>Work Environment</u></strong></p>\n<p>Work is primarily performed in both inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat, noise from motorized maintenance equipment, vibrations, atmospheric conditions, oils, greases, fumes, dirt, sharps from metal and glass, and biting or stinging insects and possibly reptiles. Employees must wear hearing/visual protection while performing most field work and may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens requiring specialized personal protective equipment. Employee may frequently work in close quarters, crawl space, shafts, manholes, small, enclosed rooms and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.</p>",
