Description
Overview
Department 448 Network Administration Engineering Team works to design, implement, and maintain network infrastructures to support the design, development, testing and integration of system software for US Navy Nuclear Submarines. These network infrastructures, that are served by the System and Network Administrators, support a variety of engineering teams that develop and maintain a variety of submarine platforms and control systems such as: Ship Control, Combat Weapons Systems, Weapons Stowage and Handling, as well as other specialized embedded safety critical shipboard and database systems, simulators, and land based trainers. The Network Administration Engineering team works to assure that these network infrastructures and the engineering development platforms are up to date and follow the latest cybersecurity standards.
Specific responsibilities include:
Design, implement, maintain, and secure an organization's IT infrastructure, including LANs, WANs and VPNs. Key tasks include configuring routers/switches, monitoring performance, troubleshooting connectivity issues, managing firewalls for security, and performing upgrades.
Working with software developers to provide robust development environments while implementing security controls
Qualifications
Required:
High School diploma or equivalent
10+ years of experience with the following:
Performing regular maintenance, applying patches, upgrading software, and migrating to new technologies.
Troubleshooting & Maintenance: Identifying, diagnosing, and repairing hardware and software failures.
System Design & Optimization: Evaluating existing systems to improve functionality, scalability, and performance.
Documentation & Support: Creating documentation for system configurations and procedures, as well as training staff on new technologies.
Infrastructure Management: Installing, configuring, and upgrading servers, network components, and software applications.
System Security & Monitoring: Maintaining security protocols, conducting risk assessments, performing regular backups, and monitoring system health to ensure uptime.
Automation: Scripting and automating repetitive tasks to improve operational efficiency.
Preferred:
Understanding of both DoD (National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual) and NIST 800-53 and/or NIST 800-171 security controls, CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, CISSP certifications
Understanding of networks, DNS, Firewall, IPS
Familiar with Containers, networking in containers
Experience with administration of one or more of the following technologies preferred (ESXi/Vcenter, RHEL, Ansible, Satellite, Tenable, Log360, etc.)
Familiar with Identity and Access Management technologies, Active Directory, RHEL IdM, CISCO ISE
Familiarity with linux administration of one or more of the following technologies for software development teams preferred\ (Jira/Confluence/JSM, GitLab, etc.)
Design & Implementation: Creating network architecture (conceptual, logical, physical) and installing hardware like routers, switches, load balancers, and firewalls
Skills
Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and writing skills, including the ability to write documentation
Strong technical understanding of networking systems
Ability to work in a collaborative environment
Mentoring and developing others
Customer focus and presentation skills
Highly motivated, with ability to perform independently, as well as interact with other groups and organizations in an engineering environment
