Description
Welcome to Design Works Engineering! We are a multi-discipline engineering firm inclusive of civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, energy modelling, and fire protection design. Our diverse staff all share the same vision – create great projects, and even better relationships.
Our electrical engineering team provides tailored solutions ranging from municipal distribution systems for new land developments to full-building electrical designs and lighting studies. We pride ourselves on listening deeply, responding quickly, and delivering efficient, reliable, and cost-effective systems. Our work supports community development and enhances everyday life through thoughtful engineering.
About the Role
Design Works Engineering is seeking an Electrical Engineering Lead to play a key role in the continued growth of our Toronto office. This is an exciting opportunity for a senior professional who excels in delivering high‑quality electrical designs while providing technical direction, mentorship, and oversight to a growing team.
The Electrical Engineering Lead will act as a technical authority and project leader, overseeing complex building and subdivision projects from concept through construction. You will work closely with clients, internal teams, and external stakeholders to deliver practical, coordinated, and cost‑effective electrical systems that meet both code requirements and real‑world construction needs.
We are seeking candidates with 8+ years of consulting experience, strong building design expertise, and the confidence to lead projects, guide junior staff, and contribute to team development and operational excellence.
What You’ll Do
Technical Leadership & Project Delivery
Serve as the technical lead for building and subdivision electrical projects, ensuring quality, consistency, and code compliance.
Oversee and review electrical designs, calculations, and documentation prepared by junior staff.
Provide technical guidance and problem‑solving support throughout the project lifecycle.
Building Electrical Design
Lead the design of electrical systems for commercial, residential, industrial, hospitality, institutional, and mixed‑use buildings.
Perform and review load calculations, short‑circuit and coordination studies, and system sizing.
Design lighting layouts, lighting control systems, and photometric studies.
Lead the design of fire alarm, life safety, emergency, and standby power systems (UPS and generators).
Prepare grounding, bonding, heat trace, and communications system designs.
Municipal & Subdivision Electrical Design
Lead the design of low‑ and medium‑voltage distribution systems for subdivisions and large land development projects.
Oversee streetlighting, distribution pathways, and communications network layouts.
Coordinate with the City of Toronto, telecom providers, and other authorities having jurisdiction.
Contribute to feasibility studies, servicing reviews, and electrical planning for new communities.
Coordination, QA/QC & Documentation
Review and stamp electrical drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
Ensure deliverables meet internal QA/QC standards and client expectations.
Coordinate closely with civil, structural, mechanical, and architectural teams to deliver integrated designs.
Support energy audits, feasibility studies, and code compliance reviews.
Construction & Client Support
Provide senior technical support during construction, including shop drawing reviews, RFIs, and site visits.
Lead client meetings and act as a trusted technical advisor.
Deliver practical, buildable solutions aligned with project budgets and schedules.
Mentorship & Team Development
Mentor and support junior designers and EITs through technical guidance, review, and coaching.
Contribute to building and strengthening the Toronto electrical team.
Support continuous improvement of electrical design standards, tools, and processes.
What You Bring
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered and in good standing with PEO.
5–10+ years of consulting electrical engineering experience, with strong building design expertise.
Proven ability to lead projects and provide technical oversight.
Strong working knowledge of:
Canadian Electrical Code (CEC)
Ontario Building Code
Municipal standards, particularly City of Toronto and municipal requirements
Proficiency in AutoCAD; Revit and lighting calculation software experience is an asset.
Demonstrated experience with:
Power distribution systems
Fire alarm and life safety systems
Lighting and photometric design
Low‑, medium‑, and high‑voltage systems
Subdivision electrical and communications design
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
A practical, construction‑focused mindset with strong judgment and problem‑solving ability.
What We Offer
Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
Company-wide wellness program.
A role in shaping and growing the Toronto electrical team.
Opportunities to work on diverse, high‑impact projects across Ontario and Canada.
A collaborative and supportive environment where your expertise directly influences project outcomes and community development.
At Design Works Engineering we are offering a career rather than a job: supporting our team members to reach their full potential is at the heart of our business for delivering superior value to our clients on each of our building projects.
Design Works Engineering is an equal-opportunity employer. If you feel as though you are the right fit for this position, please apply in confidence. If you require any accommodation in the recruitment process, please let us know.
The most qualified candidates will be contacted directly by Design Works Engineering for further discussion.
