Who We Are
Founded in 2001, LEARN is a non profit network of PreK-8th grade elementary schools that is creating measurable, transformational change in the lives of its students. We currently educate 4,100 students, a majority low-income, minority student population (88% and 98%, respectively), across 11 campuses across Chicago, Lake County, and Washington D.C.
Our schools provide a rigorous educational program that is built upon an intimate understanding of each student’s individual learning style and academic needs. We are guided by five core values which include: expectations of high achievement; mutual respect; the development of a safe and nurturing environment; active family involvement; and the positive development of the Whole Child.
LEARN alumni graduate college at 2x the rate of their peers, exceeding city, state and national averages. Our college graduation rate is 10 points above the national average for all students regardless of socio-economic status or ethnicity. We are proud to be closing the achievement gap.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the ESL-Bilingual Teacher is to provide academic instruction to English Learners. S/he will develop and deliver lesson plans to groups and individual students utilizing academic development language standards.
What You'll Do
Instructs English Learners for the purpose of improving their success in academics and skills
Develops lesson plans and delivers group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines.
Adapts classroom work for the purpose of providing students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans.
Implements LEARN’s English Learners program design to fulfill the requirements of support for English learners needing academic content areas including Reading, Writing, Math, and Science.
Obtains training for and assists with administration of language assessments for the purpose of evaluating student language proficiency (MODEL and/or W-APT and screenings, ACCESS test).
Maintains organized records of documentation regarding student achievement in core courses
Produces progress reports and report cards on regular and as-needed basis.
Utilizes evidence-based instructional strategies which support language learning in core content subjects.
Collaborates with English Learners coordinator and other staff to support students experiencing academic performance challenges related to English language learning.
Interprets student performance data and implements appropriate support structures
Communicates and confers effectively both orally and in written form with students, parents, colleagues and administration.
Uses audiovisual aids, computers, and or other interactive technology to supplement and support lessons.
Creates a classroom culture conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Keeps informed of and complies with school, Network, and state regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
Schedules student groups.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
What You'll Need
What You'll Need
Proof of Proficiency in both English and Spanish (for BILINGUAL certified teachers)
Valid Illinois ESL certification
Valid Illinois teaching certification
Bachelor's degree with experience working in a multicultural setting
Ability to make technically correct translations from English to Spanish and Spanish to English with speed and accuracy
Knowledge of evidence-based language acquisition strategies
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics
Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (i.e., Word, Power Point, Excel, etc.), internet research and database functionality
Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills
Professional demeanor
Experience in developing and implementing procedures
Ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities and a diverse workload, while achieving results in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Detail oriented and highly organized
Ability to diffuse tense situations and get others organized to meet project expectations
High degree of initiative and independent judgment
Ability to tactfully and effectively deal with public and staff at all levels in a personable and professional manner
A high level of energy and a consistently positive attitude
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files. Physically demands require the ability to stand, bend, reach high and low, stoop, walk around the classroom and kneel upwards of 60% of the day. In addition walking up and down stairs several times a day, must be able to lift 15 to 20 pounds for short periods of time and push and pull 15 to 20 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work performed in a school environment. This role requires participation and attendance at school-sponsored events and meetings.
