Description
Join a team supporting the future of aerospace innovation at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center.
Herndon Solutions Group (HSG) is seeking an experienced Medical Director (MD/DO) to support Occupational Health Services operations at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC), a world-renowned aerospace research and flight test facility. This unique role combines occupational medicine, aviation medicine, emergency response, workforce wellness, and operational leadership in support of personnel engaged in cutting-edge aerospace research and mission operations.
This is not a traditional clinic environment. The Medical Director will serve as a trusted clinical leader supporting workforce health, operational readiness, and safety in direct support of NASA’s research and flight missions.
This position is contingent upon contract award. The anticipated contract start date for this position is October 1, 2026.
General Description
The Medical Director serves as the lead physician for the Health Unit and works closely with NASA leadership, occupational health staff, environmental health professionals, and operational teams to ensure compliance with NASA procedural requirements, OSHA standards, FAA regulations, and occupational medicine best practices.
This role provides clinical leadership, occupational medicine oversight, aviation medical support, emergency response guidance, and quality assurance for a multidisciplinary occupational health program supporting NASA personnel, contractors, and mission operations.
This is a highly visible role requiring strong clinical judgment, operational awareness, leadership capability, and the ability to support a dynamic aerospace and research environment.
How You Will Fulfill Your Mission
Clinical & Occupational Medicine Oversight
Serve as the designated Medical Director for the Occupational Health Clinic. Perform occupational and preventive medical examinations in accordance with NASA Procedural Requirements (NPR 1800.1), OSHA standards, and applicable regulatory guidance. Conduct and oversee: Occupational medical examinations FAA First, Second, and Third Class aviation medical examinations NASA aviation medical certifications DOT/FMCSA medical certifications Qualified Non-Crewmember (QNC) evaluations Medical surveillance examinations Travel medical clearances Assess and manage occupational injuries and illnesses within clinic capabilities. Provide urgent/emergent medical assessment and stabilization until transfer to higher levels of care. Review diagnostic testing and laboratory results and direct appropriate follow-up care. Provide medical direction and clinical oversight to Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, nursing staff, and other licensed medical personnel. Aviation & Aerospace Medicine Support
Perform NASA and FAA aviation medical certification examinations. Prepare aeromedical summaries and waiver documentation for presentation to NASA Aerospace Medicine Boards. Evaluate medical qualification for flight status and non-crewmember participation. Serve as a technical medical resource regarding aerospace medicine and occupational health matters. Emergency Response & Operational Support
Participate in medical emergency response activities and emergency preparedness exercises. Respond to on-site medical emergencies in accordance with NASA emergency response procedures. Support mass casualty, disaster response, and pandemic preparedness operations. Participate in aircraft mishap exercises, emergency drills, and after-action reviews. Program Leadership & Compliance
Ensure clinic operations comply with NASA, OSHA, FAA, FMCSA, and applicable federal/state regulations. Develop and maintain standing medical orders, protocols, and clinical procedures. Participate in medical quality assurance and peer review activities. Support audits, inspections, accreditation activities, and corrective action implementation. Maintain accurate and timely documentation within NASA electronic health record systems. Coordinate with NASA leadership and Occupational Health Program stakeholders on operational and medical matters. Health Promotion & Wellness
Support wellness initiatives, preventive health activities, and employee education campaigns. Provide oversight related to Fitness Center medical clearance activities and AED program support. Participate in health promotion events, screenings, and occupational health training initiatives. Certification Requirement Notice:

Required Qualifications
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution. Active, unrestricted medical license in California or ability to obtain and maintain California medical licensure within required timeframe. FAA Senior Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) certification required or ability to obtain within designated timeframe. Minimum of 5+ years of clinical experience. Current BLS and ACLS certification. Experience interpreting occupational health testing including audiometry, spirometry, EKGs, and medical surveillance data. Strong understanding of OSHA, FAA, FMCSA, and occupational medicine standards. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a highly regulated federal environment. Preferred Qualifications
Board Certification in Occupational Medicine, Aerospace Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or related specialty. Prior NASA, DoD, military, federal, or aerospace industry experience. Experience supporting emergency preparedness and incident response operations. Experience supervising or leading multidisciplinary clinical teams. Familiarity with electronic health record systems and occupational health databases.
