Welcome to Design Works Engineering! We are a multi‑discipline engineering firm inclusive of civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, energy modelling, and fire protection design. Our diverse staff all share the same vision – to create great projects, and even better relationships. Our team is a group of creative professionals from all walks of life, and we want to hear from you! Position Overview Design Works Engineering is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineering Lead (P.Eng.) to join our growing Toronto, ON office. This key leadership role will be responsible for technical excellence, team mentorship, and delivery oversight for mechanical building services projects, while contributing to the continued growth of our mechanical discipline within a rapidly expanding national firm. Key Responsibilities As the Mechanical Engineering Lead, you will provide both technical expertise and leadership across a wide range of projects: Lead mechanical engineering scope through all project phases, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, budgets, schedules, and client requirements. Act as the technical authority for Mechanical Building Services systems, including heating, cooling, ventilation, plumbing, controls, and related systems. Oversee the preparation, review, and approval of engineering drawings, specifications, and design documentation. Perform and review load calculations, including heat load calculations using HAP or similar software. Guide and mentor intermediate and junior mechanical engineers and designers, fostering technical growth and consistency across projects. Establish, maintain, and improve internal mechanical engineering standards, procedures, and quality control practices. Review client specifications, shop drawings, and contractor submissions for compliance with design intent and codes. Prepare and review technical reports, studies, and analyses to support design submissions and permit approvals. Collaborate closely with project managers and cross‑disciplinary teams to deliver coordinated, high‑quality designs. Interface directly with clients, authorities having jurisdiction, suppliers, and contractors as the mechanical discipline lead. Support proposal development, fee estimates, and business development initiatives as required. Conduct site visits and surveys to provide construction support and resolve field‑related issues. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSc. Eng., B.Eng.) Minimum 5 years of experience designing mechanical systems for commercial, institutional, low‑ and high‑rise buildings, and multi‑family residential projects. P.Eng. designation with PEO in good standing (required). Proven experience in a senior or lead mechanical engineering role, including mentorship and technical oversight. Strong working knowledge of applicable building codes, standards, and best practices. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines. Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively with clients and internal teams. Business development mindset with the ability to identify opportunities and strengthen client relationships. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and Revit. Fluency in English (spoken and written). Who You Are A confident technical leader who takes ownership and accountability for project outcomes. A self‑starter with strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and self‑schedule. Comfortable making decisions, providing direction, and supporting team members without constant guidance. Collaborative, reliable, and transparent in your communication style. Thrives in a fast‑paced environment and embraces challenges as opportunities to grow and improve. Passionate about delivering high‑quality engineering solutions and mentoring the next generation of engineers. What We Offer Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package. Company-wide wellness program. A leadership role in strengthening and growing the mechanical team. Opportunities to work on diverse, high‑impact projects throughout Ontario and across Canada. A collaborative and innovative work environment where your expertise directly shapes communities and project outcomes. Long‑term career growth within a rapidly expanding national firm. At Design Works Engineering, we are offering a career rather than a job. Supporting our team members in reaching their full potential is central to how we deliver superior value to our clients on every project. Design Works Engineering is an equal‑opportunity employer. If you feel you are the right fit for this position, please apply in confidence. If you require accommodation during the recruitment process, please let us know. The most qualified candidates will be contacted directly by Design Works Engineering for further discussion.
