Description
The Position:
The Mental Health Care Manager (MHCM) supports and facilitates the care of student mental health and well-being on campus.
This role will work closely with
the Student Life department, the Student Health & Wellness providers on campus and other relevant university faculty & staff to accomplish acting as a first point of contact for students looking for mental health supports, helping triage students to the most appropriate resource for their needs, coordinating service, arranging for education and training opportunities for students, and coordinating groups or sessions relating to mental health and well-being.
This position is a full-time role from August-May (10 months – 37.5 hrs per week) – FTE 83%
Part time or alternative scheduling of hours can be discussed.
The role is under the Managerial / Professional 1 Job Class.
Responsibilities :
Student Mental Health Support:
Triaging students who are needing mental health or related support. The MHCM will be involved in the triaging of students and their concerns, as needed. This may include meetings with students to assess their needs for referral purposes. This triaging is non-therapeutic (not counselling).
Referring students to the relevant support services (i.e. medical, counselling, academic supports, etc.)
Coaching, encouraging and empowering students in their mental health journey
Receiving Early Intervention Forms (or related forms/communications) from staff and faculty and developing a plan of care for mental health support for the students involved
Supporting students who are experiencing semi-urgent or urgent mental health situations, with referral to appropriate crisis services as needed
Developing a supportive reintegration plan for students returning to campus after hospitalization/ER/medical leave related to mental health issues. Following up with students and situations, as needed
May involve developing relationships and connections with local mental health agencies and other external supports, making arrangements with partnering agencies, community resources, etc., as needed. Liaising and collaborating with local authorities and professionals, as needed.
Informing relevant university employees of student concerns, when appropriate
Identifying and supporting students who are facing barriers or are experiencing higher risk to their mental health
Promoting mental health and well-being on campus
Communicating wellness programs and services to students
Working with the Marketing and Communications team to manage relevant social media and other related channels designated for student wellness.
Contributing to social media content on channels designated for wellness purposes.
Working with other Redeemer employees to promote wellness programs and services
Delivering presentations about the mental health resources available to students, employees and, possibly, prospective students.
Facilitate Wellness Programming (in collaboration with Student Life staff and other relevant employees)
Coordinating group education, workshops, group sessions, events and peer-to-peer support programs that promote mental health and well-being
Providing training and equipping to relevant groups on campus
Communicating and disseminating resources to students and staff
Collaborating with counselling services, Student Life and Student Health Clinic in mental health and wellness planning
Preferred Skills and Attributes :
Minimum of 5 years’ experience. Required : Experience managing mental health concerns and ability to identify and manage crisis situations
CPR and First Aid certification will be required by the successful candidate post hire
Recommended: Mental Health First Aid, ASIST training or equivalent
Experience working with young adults
Passionate commitment to the Reformed confessional tradition and ability to clearly and effectively articulate it for a multi-denominational audience
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, Google Suite, Zoom
Other Requirements:
Understanding of Redeemer University (mission, values, and Reformed Christian identity)
Education/Training :
Minimum: A Bachelor’s degree in social work with additional professional mental health certification (or another relevant discipline such as Bachelors of Science in Nursing with a Mental Health certificate or relevant experience in mental health).
Preferred: A Master’s degree in social work (psychology, counselling or another relevant field of study will also be considered) with additional professional mental health certification.
