Job Summary:
The Biomedical Equipment Technician provides expert maintenance and technical support for complex medical and diagnostic equipment in support of Navy medical operations. This position performs advanced preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, and testing while ensuring compliance with manufacturer specifications, regulatory standards, and Navy policy. The role requires in‑depth technical expertise across electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, and medical gas systems to ensure the safe, reliable, and effective operation of critical medical devices.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Apply comprehensive knowledge of biomedical engineering principles, electronic systems, and the capabilities, limitations, design characteristics, and functional use of a wide range of medical and diagnostic equipment. Utilize advanced knowledge of electronic circuitry, including electronic tubes and transistors, X‑ray tube operations, and the interrelationships among electrical, electronic, chemical, radiation, hydraulic, pneumatic, vacuum, and medical gas systems within complex medical devices. Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, and testing on a broad range of medical equipment, including sterilizers, suction systems, dental units, imaging systems, and patient care devices, in accordance with manufacturer specifications, regulatory standards, and Navy policy. Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues by identifying equipment, facility, or service deficiencies and determining appropriate corrective actions to restore safe and effective equipment operation. Demonstrate working knowledge of hydraulic systems, including grips, locks, stop and release mechanisms, and the ability to determine proper adjustments and identify leaks or system failures. Utilize electronic and mechanical diagnostic tools, including multimeters, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, pressure gauges, micrometers, calipers, and other test and measurement instruments to assess equipment performance, wear, alignment, and functionality. Interpret and apply technical manuals, specifications, regulations, policy statements, and other governing guidance while maintaining accurate maintenance and service documentation within approved maintenance management systems. Maintain awareness of advancements in medical technology, scientific developments, network protocols, cybersecurity considerations, and vendor updates that impact medical equipment support. Perform additional duties as assigned in support of mission and operational requirements.
Required Qualifications, Education and Certifications:
Successful completion of a Department of Defense (DoD) Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) program or possession of an associate degree in Biomedical Electronics Technology or Electronics Technology.
Current certification as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET).
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of experience in the biomedical field, including hands ‑ on experience performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, and repair of a wide variety of medical and diagnostic equipment.
Specialized Experience and Skills:
Demonstrated knowledge of medical equipment service operations involving complex technical requirements, with the ability to independently diagnose and resolve equipment malfunctions and system deficiencies. Comprehensive understanding of electronic circuits and electrical equipment maintenance principles sufficient to diagnose malfunctions in devices such as sterilizers, suction systems, dental units, and related clinical equipment. Proficiency in the use of electronic and mechanical test equipment, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, ohmmeters, pressure gauges, micrometers, and calipers. Ability to interpret and apply technical specifications, regulations, policy guidance, and other governing documentation related to medical equipment maintenance and regulatory compliance.
Licenses and Security Requirements:
Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to operate delivery vehicles and material handling equipment, including stand ‑ up forklifts and 4,000 – 6,000 lb capacity forklifts.
U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain the required Government security clearance.
