Department Overview
OHSU Specialty Critical Care Float Pool nurses provide high-quality, innovative and compassionate family-centered nursing care. Critical Care Float Pool supports adult critical care units and individually selected additional units [such as Emergency Department (ED), Emergency Observation Unit (ED Obs) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)] Critical Care Float Pool supports these units for selected planned and unplanned absences and for other staffing deficits. Critical Care Float Pool nurses may staff overflow area as patient care needs arise.
The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) is dedicated to delivering the highest standard of nursing care to patients and their families, ensuring optimal patient outcomes through evidence -based practices, all within a supportive and healthy work environment. Our unit employs a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care, accommodating patients with a minimum weight of 40 kg and ages generally starting at 16 years with no upper age limit.
Function/Duties of Position
The Assistant Nurse Manager is a registered nurse who provides operational leadership under the direction of the Nurse Manager to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered nursing care. The Assistant Nurse Manager supports staff development, oversees daily operations, and contributes to quality, financial, and human resource management activities. This role promotes a professional practice environment that fosters excellence in patient care and staff engagement.
The Assistant Nurse Manager is distinguished from the Nurse Manager by providing operational leadership and supervisory support on a shift or unit basis, rather than holding primary accountability for long-term strategic, fiscal, and administrative management of the department. The Assistant Nurse Manager serves as a front-line leader who implements policies, coordinate staffing, monitor patient care quality, and provide coaching and guidance to nursing staff.
1. Strategic & Unit Planning — Partners with the Nurse Manager to translate organizational and nursing priorities into unit plans; contributes to goal setting (short- and long-term), measurable targets, and implementation timelines; coordinates interventions, tracks progress using data, and communicates status to stakeholders; supports readiness for accreditation/regulatory changes.
2. Operational Leadership — Oversees day-to-day operations, including staffing, scheduling, assignments, patient flow, and escalation pathways to ensure safe, effective care; leads huddles and facilitates clear communication; may provide leadership coverage across all shifts (days/evenings/nights/weekends) as operationally needed.
3. Staff Supervision & Development — Provides coaching, mentoring, competency validation, and performance feedback; participates in orientation and evaluations; supports recruitment, retention, and succession planning; recognizes exemplary practice and addresses performance concerns.
4. Quality, Safety & Risk — Promotes adherence to professional standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements; uses data to monitor outcomes; leads/participates in performance improvement, event review, risk mitigation, and dissemination of best practices; supports standard work and error-reduction processes.
5. Human Resources & Employee Relations — Fosters engagement and a positive work environment; facilitates conflict resolution; supports attendance management and progressive performance management; ensures compliance with applicable labor/collective bargaining agreements and HR policies.
6. Resource & Financial Stewardship — Assists with productivity and resource monitoring; applies staffing tools and guidelines; monitors overtime/premium use and supply utilization; educates staff on financial implications of care decisions and supports cost-effective operations.
7. Professional Practice & Collaboration — Models ethical, professional nursing practice consistent with the ANA Code of Ethics and Nurse Practice Act; advocates for patients and families; collaborates with interprofessional teams and shared-governance structures; promotes a culture of safety, equity, and inclusion.
Required Qualifications
Education: • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
Experience: • Two (2) years of relevant clinical nursing experience in a related specialty, including demonstrated leadership responsibilities required. (e.g., charge nurse, preceptor, supervisor, or equivalent).
Licenses or Certifications: • Unencumbered Oregon Registered Nurse (RN) license (or ability to obtain prior to hire).• BLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation.• Additional clinical certifications (e.g., ACLS, NRP) may be required by assignment.• Leadership/specialty certification (e.g., NE-BC, CNML, or clinical specialty) within two (2) years of hire
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Nursing
Assistant Nurse Manager Experience and/or other nursing leadership experience
Previous management experience, project management
Current clinical certification in area of specialty
