Description
The ILS Specialist II – Technical Writer is responsible for developing, editing, and maintaining high-quality technical documentation to support Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) deliverables within a defence and shipbuilding environment. Reporting to the Supervisor, Technical Publications, the incumbent collaborates with engineering, logistics, and project teams to produce accurate, compliant, and user-focused technical publications in accordance with applicable military and industry standards.
This role involves transforming complex engineering data into clear, accessible documentation - including operation, maintenance, and Illustrated Parts Catalogs that support the safe and efficient use of naval systems and equipment throughout their lifecycle.
Note: This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employees will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement.
What you'll do
Develop under the guidance of ILS Specialist III -Technical writer and maintain a range of technical documentation, including operation, maintenance, and illustrated parts manuals, in accordance with customer, defence and company standards.
Translate engineering drawings, specifications, and design data into clear and accurate written content suitable for both technical and end-user audiences.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Functional Engineering, Configuration Management, Program Management Office, and Supply Chain, to gather source data and verify technical accuracy.
Ensure compliance of all deliverables with defence documentation requirements, classification society regulations, and internal quality management systems.
Utilize authoring and content management tools, including Hico IPS Suite, R4i, Arbortext, Adobe FrameMaker, XML editors, and related software to create, update, and publish structured documentation efficiently.
Perform validation activities, content verification, and publication quality checks, to ensure completeness and compliance prior to delivery under the guidance of ILS Specialist III -Technical writer.
Maintain version control and manage configuration changes to technical documentation throughout the lifecycle of the project.
Contributes to the continuous improvement of documentation standards, templates, and authoring processes in alignment with evolving industry practices.
Assist with internal and external audits related to documentation quality and compliance.
What you'll bring
Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, Engineering, Communications, English, or a related discipline.
Minimum 2+ years of experience developing technical documentation, preferably within a defence, maritime, or heavy engineering environment.
Experience with structured documentation standard
Familiarity with defence/shipbuilding industry standards and Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) frameworks is an asset.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and translate engineering drawings, data, and specifications into accurate documentation.
Strong command of technical writing principles, structure, and formatting for complex systems.
Proficient in technical authoring and content management tools, including Hico IPS Suite, R4i, Arbortext, Adobe FrameMaker, Raytheon Eagle, XML editors, and Microsoft Office.
Excellent attention to detail, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and compliance with applicable standards.
Strong understanding of MIL-STD, or DEF STAN documentation frameworks.
Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams.
Solid organizational and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple deliverables under tight deadlines.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a focus on precision and readability.
Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively and manage stakeholder expectations.
Analytical approach to identifying content gaps and improving documentation efficiency.
Proactive attitude toward continuous improvement and innovation in publication methods.
Commitment to upholding safety, quality, and security compliance in a defence environment.
Ability to travel domestically occasionally.
