Description

Summer Camp - Sailing Crew Camp by the Bay offers campers a unique opportunity to experience sailing aboard Hobie Cat sailboats on beautiful Biscayne Bay. The Sailing Crew plays a vital role in delivering this experience safely, smoothly, and enthusiastically. This position is ideal for responsible high school or college students with sailing experience who enjoy working with children and thrive in active, outdoor environments. Position Description Responsibilities Camp by the Bay runs from June 15 to July 24, with a mandatory staff orientation from June 10 to June 12. There will be no camp on June 19 and July 3. Primary daily work hours are 8:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with the possibility of additional after-camp work opportunities until 4:30 p.m. (based on enrollment and staffing needs). Applicants who are not available for the full camp period are still encouraged to apply; however, preference will be given to applicants who are able to work the entire session. Follow all directions from the Waterfront Director or other Waterfront Administration, including on-water instruction from the sailing safety boat and guidance during launching and docking procedures. Lead all sailing operations for assigned camper groups. Serve as the primary sailor aboard Hobie Cat sailboats during camp sessions. Take full responsibility for the safe launch, handling, maneuvering, and docking of sailboats. Prepare boats and equipment before each session, including rigging and safety checks. Ensure campers follow all sailing and waterfront safety procedures at all times. Help campers properly fit life jackets and prepare for sailing activities. Supervise campers while on board and near the water. Monitor environmental conditions and communicate any safety concerns to waterfront leadership. De-rig, clean, and properly store boats and equipment after sessions. Maintain a positive, encouraging, and safety-focused environment throughout all sailing activities. Serve as a role model through professionalism, strong judgment, and enthusiasm. Qualifications Required Qualifications Formal sailing experience required, defined as one of the following: Participation for a full season on a high school sailing team. Participation in a yacht club or school sailing program. Successful completion of the American Sailing Association 101 course or the U.S. Sailing Basic Keelboat course, and an on-site sailing skills test. Demonstrated equivalent experience approved by the Waterfront Director. Desired Qualifications Strong swimming ability and comfort in open-water environments. Prior experience with open-water boating or paddlesports. Prior lifeguarding or camp experience is preferred but not required. Ability to remain attentive and focused for extended periods. Clear communication skills and the ability to follow directions. CPR/AED and First Aid certification Performance Factors Attendance and Dependability: The employee can be depended on to report to work at the scheduled time and is seldom absent from work. Employee can be depended upon to complete work in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner and is conscientious about assignments. Communication and Contact: The employee communicates effectively both verbally and in writing with superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside the School. Relationships with Others: The employee works effectively and relates well with others, including superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside of the School.
