Description POSITION: Registered Nurse I DEPARTMENT: Medical REPORTS TO: Lead Registered Nurse LOCATION: Native American Health Center, Inc. (NAHC) 2950 International Blvd., Oakland, CA 94601 WORK HOURS: Full Time, 40 hours per week, 100% FTE, rotating Saturdays STATUS: Union, Non-Exempt POSITION SUMMARY Registered Nurses (RN) will provide direct nursing care, triage (in person and over the phone) members, support providers, and provide clinical oversight and support to the Medical Assistants. The Native American Health Center is an accredited institution and adheres to the standards of excellence set forth by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical Duties and Responsibilities 1. Perform clinical nursing duties and responsibilities with high integrity and quality. 2. Identify and respond appropriately to the health care needs of all members who are on-site at NAHC, regardless if they are appointed. 3. Assist and facilitate members in obtaining medical services through scheduling appointments, triaging members (phone and in person,) and assessing members who walk-in to the clinic seeking services. 4. Conduct nurse visits which may include, but not be limited to: wound care, pregnancy tests, injections, blood pressure (BP) checks, urine toxicology screens, pill counts, medication reconciliation, TB tests, etc. 5. Obtain and record vital signs, recognize any variances, outliers or red flags, and take appropriate follow up action. 6. Triage and assess members, and obtain health information and data pertinent to clinical care. 7. Perform basic in-house lab tests; obtain and process specimens for outside laboratories. 8. Perform EKG, audiometric, snellen and other necessary member screening tests. 9. According to departmental protocol, provide medications and conduct medication reconciliation. 10. Administer IM, ID, SC, PO, oxygen and nebulized medications as ordered by the clinicians. 11. Assist in medical procedures as needed, as well as assist providers with complicated and complex member visits, as needed. 12. Counsel members regarding health education needs, preventative health and chronic conditions. 13. Support the providers by processing medication refills, delivering test results, calling patients, etc. 14. Manage mammograms, biopsies, breast ultrasounds under the guidance of providers. 15. In coordination with providers, oversee the abnormal pap smear process. This will include tracking, scheduling appointments, and recalling members, etc. 16. Perform thorough and timely orientation and training for new staff and volunteers, as requested. 17. Act as Medical Assistant, when needed and requested. 18. Act as back up to Flow Coordinator, helping ensure optimal clinic flow and scheduling. Quality Assurance 19. Assist with evaluating nursing policies and procedures and other operational policies as they relate to the Medical department, as requested. 20. Develop, train and implement policies, procedures, protocols and standing orders, as requested. General Duties and Responsibilities 21. Participate in Saturday clinics as scheduled. 22. Member Care: Demonstrate understanding and apply working knowledge of safety policies and ensuring safe member practices. 23. Employee Safety: Safely performs all duties; follows required protective protocols to ensure personal safety as well the safety of others. 24. Must maintain compliance with ergonomic safety standards; be mindful of posture and regularly practice ergonomic stretches. 25. Quality Improvement: Actively participate in internal quality improvement teams and work with members proactively to drive quality improvement initiatives in accordance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal and state laws and regulations, and accreditation standards, when assigned. 26. HIPAA: Keep all protected health information (PHI) confidential and abide by HIPAA policies for the release and disclosure of any PHI. Will report unauthorized use of disclosure of PHI immediately, to supervisor or HIPAA security officer. 27. Work well under pressure, meet multiple and often competing deadlines. 28. At all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with supervisors, subordinates, colleagues, clients and the community. 29. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Must have a current R.N. license in the state of California, and the license must be in good standing. 2. Meets credentialing requirements established by the Native American Health Center and AAAHC. 3. Must have current CA license and an updated National Provider Identification (NPI) that provides NAHC service site. 4. Vaccination Level 1: Must be able to provide TB, Physical, seasonal flu and proof of Vaccination immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, TDAP & Hepatitis B, prior to start date. If vaccination records are more than 10 years old, titers are required to confirm immunity. 5. BLS/CPR certification must be obtained prior to start date and kept current at all times. 6. Experience using electronic health record systems (e.g., NextGen, Epic) 7. Must be able to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, with varying audiences. 8. Must be customer-service focused. 9. Must be able to maintain composure while under pressure and in stressful situations. 10. Must be detail oriented, and have the ability to set priorities appropriately in order to meet deadlines. 11. Must be able to make sound judgments and be able to delegate effectively. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 12. Two years of work experience in outpatient nursing, preferably in a clinic setting. 13. Bilingual in Spanish. NAHC is a National Health Service Corp (NHSC) approved site where primary care physicians who are eligible for loan repayment funding can fulfill their service obligation. NAHC is an Indian Health Program site for Indian Health Services (IHS) Loan Repayment Program.
