Job Summary
The Department of Medical Education at the Quillen College of Medicine of East Tennessee State University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor rank faculty position in the areas of Physiology and Pathophysiology education to teach in an active learning-based medical education program. Exceptional applicants may be considered for a convertible or tenure-track position. We seek candidates with broad training in Medical Physiology and Pathophysiology, and who demonstrate the ability for excellent teaching. Responsibilities will include teaching Physiology/Pathophysiology to medical and graduate students and management of the Physiology discipline thread across Quillen’s organ systems-based curriculum. Preference will be given to those candidates with expertise in interactive learning pedagogies, knowledge of medical school accreditation standards, and educational scholarship.
The successful candidate will contribute to the education of medical students within the foundational science curriculum, engage in scholarly activity in medical education or related fields, and participate in service that supports departmental, college, and institutional goals. We seek collaborative, learner-centered educators who are enthusiastic about using active learning approaches (e.g., team-based and problem-based learning) to promote student engagement, responsibility for learning, and clinical readiness, consistent with Quillen College of Medicine standards. Faculty are supported and promoted with the development and dissemination of educational scholarship and research programs.

Responsibilities Include:
Developing course objectives linked to USMLE content and QCOM institutional educational objectives where physiology and pathophysiology are relevant. Planning, developing, and providing active-learning student materials. Planning, developing, and providing active-learning pedagogical modalities within the pre-clinical curriculum. Writing and modifying quality NBME-style questions with faculty and staff support to be used in both the classroom and assessment settings, ensuring fair and accurate evaluation of student learning. Collaborating with faculty across basic and clinical sciences to ensure content integration. Acting as a team member to ensure courses run smoothly. Work as a valued team member in implementing course continuous quality improvement. Mentoring and supporting medical students in their professional and clinical development. Participating in departmental and institutional service, faculty development, and curriculum committees. Contributing to academic scholarship through either educational or basic/clinical sciences-based research.
Clinical Responsibilities (optional)
Engage in part-time clinical duties within the Department of Pathology, including diagnostic work and case review. Provide expertise in pathology and histopathology and contribute to departmental initiatives. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Successful candidates must present evidence of an established record of, or demonstrate a strong potential for, effective Medical Physiology/Pathophysiology teaching. A commitment to work productively with a team of medical educators from other basic and clinical science disciplines. Evidence for realized and/or potential of productive scholarly and creative activity. Ability to teach medical and graduate students from all backgrounds. Effective use of interpersonal and communication skills that incorporate tact and diplomacy. Strong ability to cultivate collaborative and mentoring relationships, solve problems, think creatively, and resolve conflicts. Strong work ethic, and approachable leadership style, and a consistent focus on the college’s immediate and strategic goals. Experience and record that reflect excellent organizational skills, effective verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail and follow-through. Fluency with standard office software and email communication required. Knowledge of student and patient privacy regulations (FERPA, HIPAA)
Required Qualifications
Applicants must have:
PhD in Physiology or a closely related field, MD, DO, PharmD, or equivalent degree At least 2-years of relevant post-graduate experience
Preferred Qualifications
Teaching experience at the medical or professional school level and at the Assistant Professor ranking. Experience in innovative educational practices, such as with active learning pedagogy. Knowledge of undergraduate medical school curricular/accreditation standards. Experience with educational and/or basic science scholarship.
