Description
Junior Data Analyst - Ethiopia
Location: Addis Ababa- Ethiopia
Preferred start date: As soon as possible
MUST HAVE: PROFICIENCY IN ONE OF [ Amharic, Tigrinya, or Afaan Oromo] AND ENGLISH
About Pula:
At Pula, we are building the systems that enable farmers worldwide to access insurance, using technology to insure this previously uninsured worldwide. We work in over 10 countries across Africa and Asia, and by 2022, have facilitated crop insurance cover to over 20 million farmers, 40% of which are women, across Kenya, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Rwanda, Uganda, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, Zambia, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Tanzania, Mozambique, Ethiopia and Malawi. We are a for profit company, and have raised over $45 million from leading venture and institutional investors as well as developed philanthropic relationships with private foundations and bilateral donors such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and German Insure Resilience Solutions Fund that have accelerated investments in our target markets.
Pula is proudly fast paced, constantly learning from the challenges we face and overcome. We are proudly culturally diverse but united in our ambition of continuous high-performance. By challenging ourselves we believe that we can overcome the hard problems we love solving.
At Pula, our culture is defined by our:
Obsession with results: We are responsible for our future and therefore we get things done!
Ability to connect the Dots: We continuously identify different customer needs & business problems and build solutions that deliver value.
Our can-do Attitude! We dare to do things differently to make things work.
Ability to have each others’ back: We look out for each other & we share high quality, timely feedback that makes us better.
Why This Role Matters:
The Field Operations team delivers seasonal execution of farmer sensitization, registration, profiling/data services, client training, and Crop Cutting Experiments (CCE) - the critical yield measurement surveys that underpin index-based insurance payouts and product validation.
As a Data Analyst Intern, you will support the data side of field operations in your assigned area. Working under the guidance of the Associate Manager and Data team, you will assist in processing, validating, and quality-checking data collected from the field - ensuring records are accurate, complete, and submitted on time.
You will be involved in reviewing incoming field data, identifying errors or inconsistencies, escalating issues to supervisors, and supporting the preparation of data quality reports. Where your language skills are required, you will assist in interpreting and transcribing Ethiopian-language documents submitted by farmers as part of the registration process.
Your work will directly contribute to ensuring that accurate, verifiable farmer and yield data reaches our systems on time - playing a tangible role in enabling reliable insurance payouts and maintaining client trust.
This is not a passive, observational role - you will be expected to be hands-on, detail-oriented, and proactive. Strong interns who demonstrate accuracy, reliability, and initiative will have the opportunity to grow within the team.
What You’ll Be Doing
Team Participation & Learning Shadow and support the data and field teams to understand end-to-end data workflows. Participate in onboarding sessions and team meetings to build familiarity with Pula's data standards and protocols. Receive coaching and feedback from supervisors and apply it proactively to improve output quality. Maintain clear and timely communication with your supervisor and teammates.
Data Collection Support & Activity Assistance Assist in data entry, farmer registration record processing, and profiling data organisation. Support the preparation and configuration of data collection surveys under supervisor guidance. Help coordinate and track the progress of data collection activities across assigned areas. Assist with data submissions - ensuring records are complete, accurate, and correctly formatted before submission.
Data Quality Checking Follow Pula's data quality Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to review collected records for accuracy, completeness, and compliance. Flag errors, duplicates, missing fields, or inconsistencies in submitted forms and escalate to the supervisor for resolution. Support back-checking and audit exercises on sampled records. Assist in reviewing geolocation data, photo records, and survey responses for correctness. Ensure all reviewed data is submitted to the data quality team within agreed timelines.
Stakeholder & Operational Support Support coordination with field staff and internal teams by relaying data-related queries or discrepancies promptly. Assist in organising and maintaining digital records, equipment logs, and data submission trackers. Escalate any technical or data access issues to the appropriate team member without delay.
Reporting Prepare and submit regular updates on data processing progress, volumes reviewed, and quality issues identified. Support the preparation of summary reports and data quality dashboards for the Associate Manager. Uphold Pula's values, ethical standards, and data confidentiality requirements in all activities.
Additional Responsibilities Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor or management that are consistent with the internship role and organisational priorities.
The Right Candidate Will Have
Currently enrolled in or recently completed a Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Information Technology, Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness Management, Social Sciences, or a related field.
Proficiency in at least one of the following Ethiopian languages: Amharic, Tigrinya, or Afaan Oromo - written and reading fluency is mandatory.
High attention to detail and a genuine commitment to accuracy in data entry and document review tasks.
Basic computer literacy - comfortable working with spreadsheets (Excel/Google Sheets) and digital data entry forms.
Good written and verbal communication skills in English.
Willingness to learn data quality processes, SOPs, and digital tools quickly with minimal supervision.
A proactive, self-driven attitude - able to manage assigned tasks, meet deadlines, and flag issues without being prompted.
Prior exposure to mobile data collection tools such as KoboToolbox, CommCare, or SurveyCTO is an added advantage.
Basic familiarity with data analysis tools (Python, R, or Power BI) is desirable but not required.
