The Iñupiaq way of life is woven into our curriculum, programs, activities, and daily interactions within Ilisagvik College and our community partners. SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Instructor/Assistant Professor of Biology/Chemistry develops and teaches general science courses, science courses for students interested in obtaining a science degree and/or entering the workforce as a science technician or similar [emphasizing high latitude implications] within the Academic Division, which may include General Biology, General Chemistry, Geoscience, and/or Physics. Additionally, the role collaborates with external partners and research scientists from other institutions on various projects. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepares and maintains updated instructional materials, course outlines, and curriculum. Maintains office hours, as required. Participates in the development of and contributes to the quality of post-secondary curriculum in the area of study. Serves as student academic advisor. Evaluates student performance and submits appropriate grades and reports. Participates in professional development, as appropriate. Completes reports and presentations, and attends meetings and special events, as required. Monitors the degree and certificate programs within the Program(s) and makes timely changes, as appropriate. Actively participates in College and community service including serving on community and task forces, participating in College activities, curriculum planning, professional development, and assisting in the budgeting of assigned programs. Manages the laboratory workload consistent with a science faculty position, including maintaining, preparing, and dispensing solutions and chemical materials (i.e., reagents, chemicals, acids, bases, buffers, stains, culture media, culture plates). Monitors collection and disposal of pathogenic waste, hazardous waste, toxic materials, and chemicals according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard. Maintains and updates the Materials Safety Data (MSD) forms. In a time-critical manner, attend to cultures by propagations of viable pathogenic and nonpathogenic stock cultures of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Maintains and cleans laboratory space (floors, surface areas) and equipment (i.e., glassware, autoclaves, incubators, refrigerators) on a daily/weekly/monthly basis Inventories, submit requisitions, restocks, and organizes supplies and equipment each semester. Complies with College policies, procedures and administrative directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances. Performs other related duties as required. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES Demonstrated teaching experience in a post-secondary environment. Demonstrated experience in curriculum development. Demonstrated experience with distance delivery of courses and curriculum. Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to travel periodically. Excellent interpersonal communication and relationship building skills. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a multicultural environment. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check. Demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: post-secondary educational systems, North Slope Borough [NSB] institutions and organizations; Iñupiat culture, language, values, and traditions. Ability to interpret and represent North Slope community values, customs, and beliefs for the College. Ability to interpret and represent College actions and western institutions to the North Slope community. Ability to support Iḷisaġvik College’s mission. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/TRAINING [Required]: Qualified to teach introductory courses in at least two of the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience, Physics, and/or related general science courses emphasizing high latitude implications. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/TRAINING [Preferred] : Doctorate degree or equivalent with an emphasis in Biochemistry, Biology, Geoscience, (or similar fields). PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: T he environmental conditions described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
