Certified Medication Assistant (MA-C)
JOB DESCRIPTION

QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent. Must be a certified nursing assistant. Must have medication aide certification. Minimum of 1 year of C.N.A. experience. Good understanding of medical and pharmacological terminology. Current CPR certification.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists licensed nursing staff by administering daily medications as ordered by the physician in accordance with established nursing standards, facility policies and procedures and state requirements.
A MA-C may perform the delegated function of medication administration and related tasks under the
supervision of a licensed nurse. A MA-C shall not administer any medication which requires nursing assessment or judgment prior to administration, evaluation and follow up, even if the medication is given by an approved medication route. A MA-C shall not administer medications to more than forty (40) patients during a shift.
APPROVED MEDICATION ROUTES
The routes in which nonprescription and legend drugs may be administered by a MA-C when delegated by a
licensed nurse include:
1. Orally
2. Topically
3. Drops for eye, ear or nose
4. Vaginally
5. Rectally
6. Transdermally
7. Oral inhaler
OXYGEN ADMINISTRATION & EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE
MA-C can:
Change and date respiratory equipment Replace oxygen tubing, nebulizer masks/tubing, and BIPAP/CPAP masks. Properly label with change-out dates according to infection control policy. Maintain oxygen concentrator equipment Remove, clean, and replace oxygen concentrator filters. Clean and store respiratory equipment appropriately after use. Manage respiratory supplies Order and track oxygen and nebulizer-related supplies. Notify supervising nurse of low inventory or supply issues. Nebulizer treatments
INSULIN & BLOOD GLUCOSE MANAGEMENT SUPPORT
MA-C can:
Perform glucometer control check Check and document glucose control solutions per manufacturer guidelines. Follow facility policy for logging quality control results. Manage diabetic supplies Track and reorder test strips, lancets, and control solutions. Monitor expiration dates and report discrepancies. Assist with Insulin inventory Reorder insulin after the initial order is placed by licensed staff. Report expired or missing insulin to nursing staff promptly.
TASKS NOT WITHIN THE SCOPE OF WORK
Tasks which shall not be delegated to the MA-C include, but are not limited to:
1. Receive, have access or administer controlled substances
2. Administer parenteral, enteral, or injectable medications
3. Administer any substance by nasogastric or gastrostomy tube
4. Calculate drug doses
5. Destroy medications
6. Receive written or verbal orders for new or changed medications
7. Transcribe orders from the medical record
8. Order initial medications (Refer to Section I, Definition of Terms)
9. Evaluate medication error reports
10. Perform treatments outside C.N.A. scope of practice
11. Conduct patient assessments or evaluations
12. Engage in patient teaching activities
13. Order or receive medications by a route that the medication assistant – certified cannot administer
DUTIES
Basic Nursing : When not engaged in administration of medication, assist with activities of daily living (ADL’s) such as hygiene, housekeeping, basic grooming, basic daily needs to promote functional independence. Assist with nutrition, hydration, elimination, personal care, positioning devices and restorative care. Observe and report changes of condition to a licensed nurse.
Delivers routine daily medications to residents under direct supervision of a licensed nurse unless otherwise allowed by state law. Observes for any adverse drug reactions and reports any problems to the nurse. Records medication administration according to company policies and procedures. Follows written or verbal instructions on how to manage medications. Observes residents for changes and documents changes in their condition accordingly. Performs tasks associated with medication administration, including vital signs, stocking of the medication carts, and removal of discontinued medications. Practices safe handling and storage of medications. Responds to resident requests and other direct care duties as assigned when not actively engaged in administration of medication.
Additional Tasks :
Treats all residents with dignity and respect. Promotes and protects all residents’ rights. Establishes a culture of compliance by adhering to all facility policies and procedures. Complies with standards of business conduct, and state/federal regulations and guidelines. Follows appropriate safety and hygiene measures at all times to protect residents and themselves. Maintains confidentiality of protected health information, including verbal, written, and electronic communications. Reports noncompliance with policies, procedures, regulations, or breaches in confidentiality to appropriate personnel. Reports any retaliation or discrimination to HR or compliance officer. Reports any allegations of abuse, neglect, misappropriation of property, exploitation, or mistreatment of residents to supervisor and/or administrator. Protects residents from abuse, and cooperates with all investigations. Reports any occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and/or hazardous chemicals in accordance with facility policy. Participates in all life safety and emergency drills and trainings. Fulfills responsibilities as assigned during implementation or activation of the facility’s emergency plan. Reports work-related injuries and illnesses immediately to supervisor. Follows established infection control policies and procedures. As a condition of employment, completes all assigned training and skills competency.

Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language. Must be a supportive team member, contribute to and be an example of team work. Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public. Must have patience, tact, and willingness to deal with difficult residents, family and staff. Must be able to relay information concerning a resident’s condition. Must not pose a threat to the health and safety of other individuals in the workplace. Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday. Ability to work beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, perform overhead lifting and perform other common physical movements as needed for the position. Subject to frequent interruptions
