Senior School Associate Teacher and Experiential Learning Coordinator School Overview St. John’s School (SJS) is a leading independent, all-gender IB World School in Vancouver, Canada, offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP) across Kindergarten to Grade 12. Position Purpose & Overview The role of Senior School Associate Teacher and Experiential Learning Coordinator will be split between these two main roles. The successful candidate will have a teaching workload as a Senior School Associate Teacher and is expected to work in their other role as Experiential Learning Coordinator. The Senior School Associate Teacher will be a collaborative member of the Senior School and will contribute to the development of the curriculum and teaching experiences at SJS. Teachers at SJS are expected to exemplify excellent professional practice and high standards of teaching and learning. The teacher will provide inclusive learning opportunities differentiated to the needs, abilities and stage of development of each student. The successful candidate will be adept at monitoring, measuring, documenting, and reporting on learning. The Experiential Learning Coordinator role is a leadership role within the school supporting all aspects of the SJS Experiential Learning Program and ensuring consistency of activities related to the program. This role encompasses the following main areas of the school’s lived curriculum: Coordinating the Co-curricular program across the school, Coordinating, executing and facilitating the development of the Outdoor Education and Experiential Learning Programs across the school with the Senior School Vice-Principal of Student Life, Contributing to the school’s risk management program as it relates to excursions, experiences, and other student activities, Facilitating experiential learning opportunities to promote wellness, and Building connections for and supporting the development of experiential learning opportunities within the curriculum across the school. Key Responsibilities Typical Senior School Associate Teacher responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Endorse the school’s mission, vision, and values. Model respectful and timely communication with students, colleagues, and parents, in line with the school’s Mutual Respect Policy. Provide coverage from Grade 6 to Grade 12 in the MYP and DP programme, including specialist areas such as French, Art, PE, and Music as appropriate. Provide personalized instruction and learning support for individual students as a coverage teacher, co-teaching alongside subject teachers as appropriate, and through working with the learning support team with in-class learning support. Establish a day-to-day connection and sense of belonging with students and colleagues. Collaborate with classroom teachers supporting areas such as curriculum planning, differentiated instruction and assessment when co-teaching and working with learning support. Supervise students during non-instructional time. Collaborate effectively as part of a team of dedicated professionals who embrace school values of courage, creativity, and citizenship. Attend professional development programmes, participate in “on-campus” professional learning, attend professional meetings which relate to curricular, administrative, or organizational matters as required, and attend relevant meetings as scheduled by the Head of Department, Curriculum Coordinators, and Senior Leadership Team. Engage or offer co-curricular activity(ies) for Senior School students. Create a safe, effective, challenging, ethical, and organized learning environment. Practice a universal design for learning approach to teaching, providing differentiated instruction for all learners to establish an inclusive learning environment. Maintain relevant understanding of and be active in using appropriate and effective technology to enhance instruction and learning. Demonstrate reliability in and understanding of implementation of risk and student management strategies. Typical Experiential Learning Coordinator responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Co-Curricular Program Work with the Principals and/or Vice-Principals to organize the offerings of co-curricular activities in the Junior and Senior School Coordinate with the Athletic Director regarding co-curricular and athletic activities. Organize the calendar of activities for the Junior and Senior Schools. Outdoor Education Program Coordinate Outdoor Education experiences across all year levels in both the Junior and Senior schools. Liaise with administration and faculty to ensure experiences are purposeful and connected to the IB Learner Profile, the school’s values, or other aspects of the School’s programming. Develop and maintain a Scope and Sequence of the Outdoor Education program. Act as the lead chaperone on Outdoor Education experiences. Excursion and Experiences Leadership and Risk Management Chaperone and Excursions/Experience Leader Training Develop standardized Acknowledgement or Risk and Informed Consent forms for all excursions/experiences they are running. In alignment with the Senior School Vice-Principal of Student Life, develop and keep the chaperone handbook and procedures for all excursions and experiences up to date. Hold information meetings, chaperone meetings, and student meetings as required prior to each Experiential Learning experience. Leadership and Guidance for Staff Guide faculty and staff through the excursion/experience planning process for Regional, National, and International Excursions/Experiences. Risk Management Regularly attends risk management team meetings. In conjunction with the Senior School Vice-Principal of Student Life, contributes to the development and implementation of Risk Management policies as they relate to school field trips, excursions, and experiences. Supports the planning and risk reviews of higher risk (Level 3 and above) excursions and experiences. Experiential Learning Connections for Wellbeing In alignment with the Senior School Vice-Principal of Student Life, coordinate activities, resources, or opportunities for teachers to utilize and enrich and embed experiential and outdoor learning in their teaching. Promoting and Reporting Coordinate communications related to the role within the School and to the wider community. Report yearly on the activities of the role and reflect on developments or changing aspects of the role. Document post-reflections once trips have been completed. Development/Training Attend conferences and workshops for Professional Development and maintenance of current standards of ethical practice. 40 hours wilderness first aid training and maintenance of valid certificate Evaluation Evaluate the Experiential Learning Program on an annual basis and post-trip, and make recommendations to the Principals for improvements or changes to the program. Required Qualifications & Key Competencies Education & Experience A valid BC Certification of Teaching Completion of a Bachelor of Education degree. Knowledge and understanding of the International Baccalaureate programmes. Well developed outdoor education knowledge and experience. Experience and adept understanding of teaching IB MYP and DP courses, and/or BC courses in a Senior School setting is an asset. Knowledge of MYP curriculum framework is considered an asset. Knowledge of MYP Service as Action and a solid understanding of the Diploma CAS Programme is considered an asset. Knowledge of the DP course content and curriculum framework is considered an asset. Need to be legally entitled to work in Canada. A Wilderness First Aid certificate is considered an asset. Key Skills & Competencies Respect, dignity, and inclusion for all members of the community. This role will require working hours outside of school office hours: often evening events; occasionally going offsite to document student programs; and occasional morning and weekend commitments.
