Description This position has a term length of 2 years, with the possibility of renewal. Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus Edmonton. The Office of Advocacy and Wellbeing (OAW) within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is seeking a dedicated Financial Literacy Consultant to join our team. This position is the primary subject matter expert within the Faculty, tasked with helping medical learners navigate the unique and often high-stakes financial challenges during their education. A critical component of this role involves fulfilling national accreditation requirements related to financial aid and debt management counseling. In this role, you will provide direct, personalized support, engaging in confidential one-on-one consultations to help students assess their needs, manage debt, and create actionable plans for financial success. You will be responsible for the design and delivery of engaging financial literacy workshops and seminars, translating common learner challenges into proactive educational programming. You will build relationships with key partners across campus to facilitate integrated financial support and resource navigation for learners. Responsibilities Individual Financial Counseling: Conduct confidential one-on-one consultations to address specific learner concerns, including budgeting, student loans, and professional lines of credit. Personalized Strategy Development: Provide empathetic and proactive support to help learners develop tailored financial strategies and action plans that align with their academic and professional objectives. Accreditation & Compliance: Collect, analyze, and report on data to ensure the MD Program meets or exceeds national accreditation requirements for debt management counseling. Program Delivery: Design and deliver engaging financial literacy workshops and seminars tailored to the specific financial realities and stressors of medical learners. Resource Curation: Develop and maintain up-to-date financial literacy resources, including online modules and tools, while ensuring compliance with university policies. Stakeholder Collaboration: Liaise with internal partners, such as the Office of the Registrar and Student Financial Support, to ensure integrated and seamless support for learner wellbeing. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: A post-secondary degree in a related field (e.g., Finance, Economics, or Education) plus a minimum of three years of proven experience in a post-secondary or university student service environment. Equivalent combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Proven experience in providing 1:1 debt management counseling and personal financial planning. Autonomy & Ownership: Ability to work with a high degree of independence as the Faculty’s subject matter expert, leading the development of the content and delivery of financial counseling and program initiatives. Diplomacy & Relationship Building: Strong interpersonal and diplomatic skills to build and maintain professional, collaborative working relationships with stakeholders at all organizational levels. Diversity & Communication: Ability to interact knowledgeably and respectfully with individuals possessing a broad range of credentials, abilities, and backgrounds. Confidentiality: Commitment to adhering to strict confidentiality guidelines and records management protocols ​​under the Access to Information Act (ATIA) and the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA). Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a similar student services role in a post-secondary environment is strongly preferred. Awareness of the unique financial challenges and stressors specifically faced by medical learners. In-depth knowledge of Canadian student financial aid programs, government loans, community/national awards, and professional lines of credit, as well as University bursaries and awards. Experience explaining complex financial terminology to a non-financial audience. Master’s degree in a relevant discipline or a recognized professional designation such as CFP, AFC, or CFA.
