Description

Description The Bronchoscopy Technician is an essential team member of the Bronchoscopy Service. The technician is fully responsible for performing all of the key responsibilities listed below, including setting up the equipment prior to procedures, providing local anesthesia to the patient, assisting the bronchoscopist with handling of procedure instruments, collection of samples, and cleaning up after procedures. In addition, the bronchoscopy technician generates reports, bills, and maintains inventory of all equipment and disposable supplies. The Bronchoscopy Service is a procedural unit of the Adult Pulmonary Laboratories, CVRI and the Pulmonary and Critical Care Division. It provides the equipment, supplies, and trained technical personnel to assist the Pulmonary Attending Physicians and Interventional Pulmonologists when they perform bronchoscopies and related pulmonary procedures, including pleural procedures. These procedures may be conducted as part of the clinical evaluation and/or treatment of patients seen on the Inpatient Consult Service, the Lung Transplant Service, and the Interventional Pulmonology Medicine Service. These procedures are also conducted as part of certain clinical research protocols carried out by the Pulmonary Attending Physicians. The service also provides training for medical residents and Pulmonary Fellows during their rotations on the Pulmonary Service at Moffitt-Long and Mt Zion Hospitals. Responsibilities Key Responsibilities List key functions and the estimated percentage of time spent performing each of the responsibilities. You should carefully examine each job to determine which functions or tasks are essential to performance.” Example : 25% Essential Performs basic design, development, modification and debugging of software. Evaluates basic software for functional areas. Analyzes existing software or works to formulate logic for basic systems, prepares basic specifications and performs coding. % of time Essential Function (Yes/No ) Key Responsibilities (To be completed by Supervisor) 65 yes Set up, assist, and clean up after procedures: The bronchoscopy technician prepares for and assists with bronchoscopies, administration of local anesthesia to patients, explaining the procedure and goal of anesthesia to patients, addressing their concerns and anxieties, with knowledge of its toxicity and adverse effects, monitoring vital signs, and collaborating with the nurse and physician on administration of conscious sedation. The technician acts much like an operating room surgical scrub nurse during procedures, assisting the physicians in administration of medications, changing traps, handling biopsy forceps, brushes, biopsy needles, and other procedural equipment; obtaining, processing, and labeling samples of tissue and fluids. The technician assists in various types of procedures such as bronchial alveolar lavage, brushings, endobronchial biopsies, transbronchial biopsies, needle aspiration biopsies, as well as more advanced procedures such as electromagnetic navigation, endobronchial ultrasound, stent placements, and related pulmonary procedures, including pleural procedures, by supporting equipment and supply readiness, set-up, turnover, and transport of equipment and supplies. The technician pushes a heavy cart containing equipment and supplies to various departments in the hospital such as Intensive Care Units, Operating Room, Radiology, Interventional Radiology, and Endoscopy. Other duties as assigned. 15 yes Generate reports and bills: Use computer software and knowledge of endobronchial anatomy to generate procedure reports and bills for services rendered in consultation with the attending physician. Use computer software to enter demographics and, in consultation with attending, observations and conclusions into database. 10 yes Maintain and evaluate equipment and order supplies: Maintain and evaluate bronchoscopes for leaks, crimps, and breakage before and after each use and before signing over to Material Services and/or Endoscopy department for sterilization. Order all supplies and equipment needed for procedures. Meet with sales representatives to learn about new advances in equipment. Prepare summary of procedures and complications for monthly Quality Assurance report to Pulmonary Division. 5 yes Train, schedule procedures and update manuals: Train new bronchoscopy technicians and pulmonary fellows in set up, clean up, and bronchoscopy procedure. Coordinate with the rest of the technicians, all procedures for the Lung Transplant Service, Pulmonary Consult Service, and Interventional Pulmonology Service to ensure full coverage of the procedures. Maintain procedure manual including procedure protocols and all aspects of the job description. 5 no Assist in Pleural and Pulmonary procedures: After completion of the six-month probation period, and as time permits, assist physicians in preparation of research publications and clinical research studies involving bronchoscopy. 100 (To update total %, enter the amount of time in whole numbers (without the % symbol - e.g., 15, 20) then highlight the total sum (e.g., 1%) at the bottom of the column and press F9. The total sum should add up to 100%.) Qualifications BA/BS in Biological Sciences or another applicable natural science major; or two years of college courses in the natural sciences plus two years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience working with (extremely ill) patients in a hospital or clinic setting Maintain environmental health and safety training, HIPAA training.
